Weekly Closer Rankings: Week 2

Ray Guilfoyle ranks the closers, and some middle relievers, for week 2 of the 2013 season.

Jim Rogash

The first few weeks of the 2013 season has shown us one thing never changes in fantasy baseball. The race for closers and the closers in waiting, is all the talk in fantasy circles. Every fantasy owner wants that next closer in line for saves, even if it means wasting a roster spot for a few weeks. I do it. Everyone does it. It's the fantasy fix that every owner needs.

Thus far in 2013, we have seen changes in the closer role on the Cubs and Brewers, and a few changes-a-brewin in Boston and Kansas City. With that said, here is my Week 2 Closer Rankings:

Week 2 Closer thoughts:

Moving Up

Sergio Romo

I moved Giants closer Sergio Romo up to the 8th spot in my rankings, as he leads MLB in saves with 5, and is the owner of a -0.09 FIP. So, that tells me when he comes in the other team has no chance of scoring. Or something like that......until his elbow starts getting cranky again.

Glen Perkins

I moved Perkins up to the 11 spot in the rankings, as he has yet to be scored upon and has saved 3 of the 4 Twins wins this season. If this pace keeps up, he will save about 50 games this season. Won't happen though.

Jason Grilli

I moved Grilli up to my 15th ranked closer this week, as he has saved all 3 of the Pirates wins this season and is also unscored upon.

Joaquin Benoit

He is manager Jim Leyland's choice in the 9th inning for now, so go grab him if he is available.

Moving Down

Joel Hanrahan

Hanrahan moves down after last night's meltdown in the 9th inning, where he gave up 2 home runs and 5 runs to blow a 2 run Red Sox lead. His walk and homer rate going back to last year is higher than you want from your closer, and now he has moved to Fenway Park. Ouch.

Mitchell Boggs

Yeah, he blew up a few days ago vs division rival Cardinals, giving up 7 runs, 6 of them earned, in 2/3rds of an inning. Trevor Rosenthal and his 100 mph heat is creeping up on him as well.

John Axford

He blew up several times over the last week and has lost his closer job to Jim Henderson, but if things follow what happened last year, he will be back closing in a few weeks.
