Jason Motte Injury Analysis

Jason Motte will start the year on the Disabled List and Mitchell Boggs is the immediate replacement.

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

One of the premiere closer seats in the MLB has recently been vacated due to a "mild strain" in the right elbow of Jason Motte. Motte will start the season on the disabled list and give way to Mitchell Boggs as the new closer for the St. Louis Cardinals. Boggs is an excellent option for both the Cards and your fantasy team, and he should be added immediately wherever you can get him. If you were in a league that scores Holds, he was probably selected in the draft and already rostered as Boggs is an elite Holds guy, but if he's sitting on the Waiver Wire pick him up ASAP. St. Louis is one of the best spots for closers as they their strong rotation and bullpen should hand over plenty of leads to the 9th inning guy.

There is no timetable for Motte's return but he has been shut down for the remainder of Spring Training and won't begin throwing again until the season starts. I don't think Motte's closer role is in jeopardy when he returns, because as good as Boggs is, he won't runaway with the job in Motte's absence. Elbow injuries are always concerning so this could be a lingering issue and Boggs could end up holding the job for more than just a few weeks so watch closely as this develops.
