Fantasy Hockey Roundup: Merry Christmas

Bruce Bennett

Hello everyone, it’s been a while since I’ve done a fantasy hockey post, but with all exams and the holiday season nearing an end it seems like a great time to help with everybody’s fantasy hockey teams. The New Year is set to ring in and by this point you should have a fairly good idea whether or not your teams are going to be in contention for the championship this season, so if you are not in that spot right now it is high time to make some trades and get back into a position to win.

Waiver Wire:

The waiver wire in deep leagues is pretty barren at the moment, but there can still be some good deals to be found.

Mark Giordano (Owned in 46% of Yahoo Leagues) – Giordano is a very solid fantasy asset for your team, and before he was hurt was owned in upwards of 60% of Yahoo Leagues. Giordano is not only the captain of the Flames, but is a consistent point-producing defenseman who sees good powerplay minutes and plays well for a weak Flames squad. Giordano is heating up as of late, putting up 6 points in his last 8 games, and is a good add if you need a defenseman.

Ryan O’Reilly (Owned in 50% of Yahoo Leagues) – O’Reilly was a player I was interested in as a fantasy sleeper before the season began and has thus far played better than I expected he would. O’Reilly is a top line player on the Avs, and has followed up a season where he had 20 points in 29 games with 25 in 39 so far. He plays with former 3rd Overall pick Matt Duchene and recent 1st Overall selection Nate Mackinnon beside him and has put up 8 points in his last 8 games. O’Reilly does have a fairly high 5v5 shooting percentage thus far, so ride him until the points stop coming, but this far into the season O’Reilly would be a good add for most teams needing some scoring depth.

Ryan Johansen (Owned in 62% of Yahoo Leagues) – I have no clue how Johansen’s ownership is so low considering he has been one of the best forwards so far in fantasy this year. Johansen has 8 points in his last 8 games, but also has 30 points and 103 shots through 37 games this season and has been one of Columbus’ best players in the early going this year. For comparison’s sake, Johansen’s numbers are similar or better than players like James van Riemsdyk (89% Owned), Jason Spezza (97% Owned) and Jordan Eberle (96% Owned). Grab him if you can.

I’d like to take the time right now to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. If you have any questions, as always, leave them below and I will answer them.
