A Look Back at our 2013 Consensus Second Base Rankings

Ray reviews the Fake Teams 2013 Consensus Second Base rankings and profiles three second baseman whose value increased this season and three whose value dropped this season.

David Richard-USA TODAY Sports

I continue with my review of the Fake Teams 2013 Consensus Position Rankings by looking at our fantasy second base rankings from last November-December timeframe.

The 2013 fantasy second base position was highlighted by break out performances from Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter and Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy. Carpenter led the National League in runs score with 126 and hit .318 in his first season of full duty at the big league level. Where do the Cardinals find these guys?

Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy was one of the biggest surprises of the 2013 season, as he hit .286 with 13 HRs, 92 runs, 78 RBI and 23 stolen bases. 23 stolen bases from a guy who had stolen 19 bases in his major league career coming into the season.

Now let's take a look at the Fake Teams Consensus Second Base Rankings for 2013:

Three Up

Jason Kipnis, CLE

Had he not had yet another second half swoon, I would have had no problem ranking Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis as my #1 fantasy second baseman for 2014. Kipnis still ended the season hitting .284 with 17 HRs, 86 runs, 84 RBI and 30 stolen bases. He ranked in the top 4 amongst fantasy second baseman in runs, RBI and stolen bases, and his 17 home runs ranked 7th. He is my #2 fantasy second baseman right now.

Daniel Murphy, NYM

I wrote about Murphy above, but he enjoyed a breakout season for the struggling Mets lineup this season. He will rank in my top 10 fantasy second baseman in 2014.

Jedd Gyorko, SD

Gyorko showed that his power breakout in AAA last season was not just a fluke as his 23 home runs in 125 games ranked second amongst his fantasy brethren at the keystone. He appears to be a legit power source for fantasy owners at second base next season.

Others worth mentioning: Anthony Rendon (WAS), Scooter Gennett (MIL)

Three Down

Dan Uggla, ATL

Yeah, his season was so bad that the Braves left him off their playoff roster, right or wrong. Uggla had his worst season as a big leaguer in 2013, hitting just .179-.309-.379 with 22 HRs, 60 runs and 55 RBI. Gone are the days of 30 home runs and 90 RBI from him year in and year out. He will fall out of my top 12 fantasy second baseman next season.

Danny Espinosa, WAS

Another hitter who had trouble making contact this season, Espinosa's season was so bad, he was sent down to AAA and wasn't even called up when they expanded rosters in September. He is a trade candidate this offseason.

Jurickson Profar, TEX

What the heck happened to the #1 prospect in the game in 2013? Well, he is young. I will give him that. But, he did not perform up to expectations and there are rumors he could be traded this offseason in the Rangers effort to get a big bat (Giancarlo Stanton?) or starting pitcher (David Price?). He still has a bright future, but his star has dimmed a bit with his performance in a part time role this season.
