A Look Back at our 2013 Consensus Shortstop Rankings

Ray reviews the Fake Teams 2013 Consensus Shortstop rankings and profiles three shortstops whose value increased this season and three whose value dropped this season.

Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

I continue with my review of the Fake Teams 2013 Consensus Position Rankings by looking at our fantasy shortstop rankings from last November-December timeframe. Below are links to the positions that have been reviewed to date:

Catcher

First Base

Second Base

Before we get into the rankings, let's take a look the the shortstop position for fantasy purposes:

  • There were only four shortstops to hit 20 or more home runs in 2013, while there were five in 2012.
  • Seven shortstops stole 20 or more bases this season, while there were 11 in 2012. It appears stolen bases were down in 2013.
  • In 2012, there were four shortstops to hit 20 or more home runs and steal double digit bags. That number dropped to two in 2013.
  • Ian Desmond and Hanley Ramirez are the only two shortstops to hit 20 or more home runs and steal double digit bags in 2013. Ramirez will be my # 1 ranked fantasy shortstop in 2014.

Let's take a look at the Fake Teams Consensus Shortstop Rankings for 2013, following by player profiles for shortstops ranked 1 - 13:

Three Up

Jean Segura, MIL

Segura's value increased in a big way this season, as he hit .294 with 12 HRs, 74 runs, 49 RBI and 44 stolen bases this season. He might have been the best hitter in the game for the month of April, but his batting average dropped in every month except July, and ended up hitting .241 in the second half of the season, after hitting .325 in the first half.

Everth Cabrera, SD

ECab had a great season before missing 50 games due to his connections to the Biogenesis mess. He stole 37 bases in 95 games, so he probably would have led the majors in steals if he had not been suspended.

Ian Desmond, WAS

I was wrong about Desmond as I was down on him coming into the season. I didn't think he could repeat his power breakout in 2012, and he did just that, hitting 20 home runs and stealing 21 bases to boot. He should be the third shortstop off the board in all leagues in 2014.

Three Down

Derek Jeter, NYY

Injuries limited Jeter to just 73 plate appearances this season, and he turned 39 in June of this season, so age and injuries could limit him in 2014. It will be interesting to see if the Yankees trade for a shortstop this offseason.

Jimmy Rollins, PHI

Rollins is another shortstop who is succombing to the age bug, and I think we have seen the best from him already.

Starlin Castro, CHC

What the heck happened to Castro this season? I wonder if he will turn things around under a new manager in 2014, whoever that may be. Castro endured his worst season as a pro, hitting just .245-.284-.347 with 10 HRs, 59 runs, 44 RBI and 9 stolen bases. His numbers were down across th board this season, so his owners are hoping a new manager can kick start him in 2014.
