Roto Roundup: Trevor Bauer, Mike Moustakas, Jason Heyward and Others

Well, the consecutive inning scoreless streak for R.A. Dickey is now over as he gave up his first earned runs in the third inning of last night's game. His streak ends at 44.2 scoreless innings. Quite a feat for a 37 year old knuckle ball pitcher.

Diamondbacks pitching prospect Trevor Bauer will finally get the call on Thursday to make his first major league start. Thus far in 2012, he is 11-1 with a 2.19 ERA, 1.317 WHIP, and a 111-46 strikeout to walk ratio in 90.1 innings of work in AA and AAA this season. He has had trouble with his control in the minors, and it may be a bigger issue in the big leagues, but he should be a solid source of strikeouts for those of you in leagues that count strikeouts as a category.

Phillies starter Cole Hamels was well on his way to his 11th win until he gave way to the Phillies bullpen and he came away with a no-decision as the Alberto Bastardo gave up a 3 run home run to Rays first baseman Carlos Pena to blow the lead and the game. Hamels threw 7 shutout innings, giving up 3 hits, 3 walks and striking out 7, and is now 10-3 with a 3.03 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and a 106-25 strikeout to walk ratio in 104 innings pitched this season. He has given up 2 runs or less in 9 of his 15 starts, and has struggled in June, giving up 16 earned runs in 33.2 innings.

If you're looking for a strikeout pitcher sitting on the waiver wire in most leagues, go out and grab Padres starter Andrew Cashner, as he may get the call up from AA San Antonio to take the place of starter Anthony Bass, who is headed to the DL. Cashner has dominated in his 3 AA starts, tossing 14.1 innings, giving up 3 earned runs, just 3 walks and striking out 22. I thought he was the first choice to close in San Diego once Huston Street is eventually traded, but the Padres front office wants to see if he can start.

One of the reasons why it has taken the Diamondbacks so long to call up Trevor Bauer is the performance of young starter Wade Miley. Miley held the Cubs to one run on 3 hits, a walk and 7 strikeouts to win his 9th game of the season yesterday. Miley is now 9-3 with a 2.19 ERA, 2.88 FIP, 3.65 xFIP, 1.01 WHIP and a 64-18 strikeout to walk ratio in 90.1 innings of work this season. He isn't a big strikeout pitcher, but keeps the ball on the ground at a 49.1% clip and walks under 2 batters per nine innings.

Tigers starter Justin Verlander had a typical Verlander start yesterday, tossing a complete game vs the Pirates, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits, a walk and 7 strikeouts. He raised his record to 8-4 with a 2.52 ERA, 2.68 FIP, 3.35 xFIP, 0.97 WHIP, and a 113-28 strikeout to walk ratio in117.2 innings. He has given up 2 runs or less in 11 of his 15 starts this season, and has given up just 7 home runs in those 15 starts.

Rangers first baseman Mitch Moreland was placed on the DL on Friday with a strained left hamstring, and have elected to move Michael Young to first base to fill in while he is out of action. Young is having a down season at the plate, hitting .270-.299-.351 with 3 HRs, 34 runs and 29 RBI this far. The 35 year old has played everywhere on the infleld, except catcher, for the Rangers, but one has to wonder if the time has come for the Rangers to call up blocked third base prospect Mike Olt to play first base. Olt has torn up the Texas League this season, hitting .305-.414-.595 with 20 HRs, 13 doubles, 46 runs, 58 RBI and a 76-46 strikeout to walk ratio. Jason proposed a solid trade idea on Sunday saying the Rangers should deal Olt to the Cubs for starter Matt Garza. That trade proposal benefits both teams.

Coming into the season, Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer was getting all the love and hype amongst fantasy writers, including me, but teammate Mike Moustakas is the Royals hitter who is performing better than expectations, rather than Hosmer. Moustakas went 3-5 with 2 HRs and 3 RBI yesterday and is now hitting .280-.347-.492 with 12 HRs, 35 runs and 36 RBI thus far, and is on pace to hit 28 HRs and drive in 83 runs. The 12 home runs ranks him 5th amongst MLKB third baseman and he is ranked 8th in RBI, after not cracking the top 12 in most fantasy third base rankings coming into this season. That will change heading into 2013.

Hosner is doing this year what Jason Heyward did to fantasy owners last year, and that is he is disappointing them. This year, Heyward is doing what many thought he would do in 2011. Heyward went 3-4 with a HR and 2 runs scored and is now hitting .278-.351-.510 with 11 HRs, 39 runs, 35 RBI and 10 stolen bases. He has hit in 10 straight games, raising his BA from .245 to .278, and is on pace to hit 25 HRs, drive in 79 runs and steal 23 bases. Not to shabby for what round you drafted him in this season without the hype.
