Terrible news for the Rays and fantasy owners as Evan Longoria will miss 4-8 weeks due to a tear in his left hamstring. Longoria had a very nice start to the 2012 season, hitting .329-.433-.561 with 4 HRs, 15 runs scored and 19 RBI. Longoria missed almost all of April last season, and will miss May and possibly all of June with the torn hamstring.
Padres starter Cory Luebke's next start will be skipped due to left elbow stiffness. Luebke has picked up where he left off last season, as he is 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA, 1.161 WHIP and a 23-8 strikeout to walk ratio in 31 innings. His K/9 has dropped from 9.9 to 6.7 this season, so maybe there is more to this injury than we know.
Jhoulys Chacin owners may want to start looking for a pitcher to pick up off the waiver wire as he has struggled to start the season, and if you believe Troy Renck from the Denver Post, he may be on his way to the minors:
Troy Renck, Rockies @TroyRenck
And just like that it's 4-0 as Ethier hits 3-run HR...Would not be surpised if Chacin is demoted to Triple-A soon. Really slumping
Chacin came into his start last night with a 5.85 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in 20 innings. He continues to be hurt by the walk and the home run as he has already given up 4 home runs and walked 11 in his 20 innings. Last night, he lasted just 4.2 innings, giving up 7 runs and 15 baserunners. Time to drop Chacin in all leagues.
More Roto Roundup after the jump:
Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman is close to returning from the DL as he was throwing the ball in practice yesterday and will take sone swings tomorrow. He is shooting to return on Sunday.
Athletics pitching prospect Jarrod Parker pitched well in his first start of the season last week, giving up just one run in 6.1 innings. Last night, pitching in Fenway Park for the first time, held the Red Sox to just one run on 4 hits, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts in 6.2 innings to earn his first major league win. He lowered his ERA to 1.38 and his WHIP to 1.08. FanGraphs David Laurilia interviewed Parker yesterday here.
Rays starter Matt Moore has struggled to start the season mainly due to poor control. He held the Mariners to just one run in 5 innings, as he gave up 7 hits, a walk and struck out 7. He is now 1-1 with a 4.20 ERA and 1.57 WHIP. Not the start that fantasy owners had expected, but most young pitchers do struggle in their first year in the big leagues.
Tigers outfielder Austin Jackson continued his hot hitting last night, as he went 4-5 with a run scored, 2 RBI and a stolen base. AJax is now hitting .314-.398-.523 with 3 home runs, 9 RBI, 17 runs, 4 stolen bases, and a solid 20-12 strikeout to walk ratio in 86 at bats. He struck out 181 times last season, so he has cut down the strikeouts in a big way.
Orioles starter Brian Matusz held the Yankees to just one run on 6 hits, a walks and 4 strikeouts in 6.1 innings last night to win his first game of the season. He certainly wasn't overpowering as he struck out just 4, induced just 6 swinging strikes and gave up 12 fly ball outs vs 3 ground ball outs.
Orioles first baseman Chris Davis went 3-4 with a HR, 3 runs and an RBI and is now hitting .333-.378-.627 with 5 HRs and 13 RBI thus far. He has homered in 4 of his last 7 games. Could he be a post hype break out player this season?
Athletics closer Grant Balfour blew a save a few days ago in Baltimore where he gave up 3 runs without getting an out. Last night, he was able to get one out in the 9th, but not before giving up 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk. Jordan Norberto nailed down the win by getting the last two outs to earn his first save of the season.
Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie went 2-4 with two runs scored and he game winning home run last night. Lawrie is hitting .287-.333-.415 with 3 HRs, 14 RBI, 13 runs and 2 stolen bases thus far in 2012. He's not hitting like he did in his callup last season, but you can't complain about his .287 BA thus far.
Brewers first baseman Mat Gamel left last night's game with a twisted knee after running into the right field wall in Petco Park, and was replaced by Travis ishikawa. Ishikawa is rosterable in deep NL-only leagues.
Astros outfielder Jordan Schafer missed last night's game due to a left oblique strain, so this injury may require a DL stint. If so, Justin Maxwell should be picked up in NL-only leagues as he could pick up a few stolen bases with Schafer out.
