Zack Wheeler - Giants SP DOB: 05/30/90
Wheeler's 2 most recent starts did not go to plan as he allowed 10 earned runs in 11 innings. He did, however, strike out 14. Wheeler's ERA now stands at 4.02 with opponents hitting .215 against him and he has struck out 82 in 71.2 innings.
Gary Brown - Giants CF DOB: 09/28/88
Brown is looking to put a miserable June behind him, in which he hit only .202 after batting .397 in May. So far in July he is hitting .412 with a 1.092 OPS. Brown's speed mixed with his OBP skills could mean he will hit near the top of the Giants order one day. He also adds a bit of power and could develop into a fantasy force.
Jedd Gyorko - Padres 3B DOB: 09/23/88
Padres management finally realized Gyoroko was too good for High-A and shipped him off to AA. In a subsequent move they sent their other top 3B prospect, James Darnell, packing his bags for AAA. In 81 games at High-A Gyorko hit .365 with 35 doubles and 18 home runs. I haven't looked it up but I would imagine Gyorko's 55 extra base hits leads all of pro baseball.
Michael Choice - A's CF DOB: 11/10/89
Choice has been on a 2 month power binge and now has 20 home runs on the year. His powerful swing creates a lot of extra bases but also plenty of swings and misses. His AVG is an uninspiring .256 and he has struck out 91 times in 77 games. If Choice learns to avoid the Ks a bit he will be able to raise the AVG enough to become a hot commodity in keeper leagues. For now, though, he is a bit risky due to the fact that he may hit below .240 in the majors.
Chad Bettis - Rockies SP DOB: 04/26/89
Bettis is starting to turn his season around with 3 starts of allowing 1 earned run each. He has a 1.51 ERA over his past 5 starts with only 24 hits allowed in 35.2 innings. Bettis seems to either shut the opposing team down completely or get hit around. If he can find a bit more consistency he will become an excellent pick-up in keeper leagues due to his high K rate, low BB rate and his strong GB%.
Kody Hinze - Astros 1B DOB: 07/29/87
Dear Houston Astros management,
Please promote Kody Hinze so his development doesn't stall. He has hit for power (22 HRs), AVG (.324) and displayed a keen eye at the plate (70/73 BB/K). He has nothing left to prove at High-A and is old for the level anyway. If you promote him to AA you will be able to see whether his numbers are legit and maybe you will have a prospect in your system with some upside.
Thanks
Adam Eaton - Diamondbacks CF DOB: 12/06/88
Eaton hit .332 in 65 games with 42/41 BB/K and 24/8 SB/CS. Eaton even added a bit of power with 24 extra base hits. He has been promoted to AA where so far he has struck out 5 times in 3 games with no walks. Eaton should develop into a useable fantasy piece in the future and may even top Gary Brown in terms of upside.
Tyler Matzek - Rockies SP DOB: 10/19/90
Matzek has completely imploded this season. After posting a 9.82 ERA in 10 California League starts he was sent down to Low-A. In 3 starts there he has a 14.00 ERA with 15 walks in 9 innings. His most recent start was a disaster that lasted only 1.1 innings where Matzek gave up 6 walks and 3 hits for 8 earned runs. Matzek was once seen as a future ace but with his control problems and dip in velocity you have to wonder if he will be able to even make the majors. He is still just 20 so there is time but the numbers certainly are not promising.
