I have been highlighting the Fake Teams Fantasy Player of the Day over the past week in the daily Roto Roundup, and have now decided to make it a separate post.
Rockies starter Jhoulys Chacin is the Fake Teams Fantasy Player of the Day for Friday as he shut out the Cubs in a complete game shutout. He gave up 6 hits and walked 2 while striking out 7 in winning his third game of the season and lowered his ERA to 1.64. The shutout was great, but Chacin induced 15 ground ball outs, and 17 swinging strikes, both of which are excellent.
Chacin made a name for himself last year as he went 9-11 with a 3.28 ERA, 1.274 WHIP and a 138-61 K/BB rate. But, as a starter, he had a 2.98 ERA, a 1.271 WHIP and a123-57 K/BB rate. In the second half of last year, Chacin went 4-4 with a 2.24 ERA., 1.21 WHIP and a 2.23 K/BB rate.
Getting back to the ground ball rate, Chacin, according to Fangraphs, has induced 14, 14 and now 15 ground ball outs in his 3 starts this season. That is sick. Before last night's game, Chacin's GB rate was 68%, and I have to think it increased with the gem he pitched last night.
I own Chacin in two of my 6 leagues, but did also trade him in the UBA league for a minor league draft pick which turned out to be Jerry Sands. As much as I like Sands, I like Chacin more. Chacin could be the Mat Latos of 2011. Latos went 14-10 with a 2.92 ERA and 1.08 WHIP last year.
