Minor League Daily Update: 4/9/2010

The minor league season kicked off yesterday and today marks the first installment of the daily minor league updates.  Some big names and top prospects had great starts to the season.  Michael Stanton and Carlos Santana, two of the most hyped offensive prospects homered (Santana twice) and showed why they will get a call to the bigs sooner rather than later.

Below is the first summary of some pitchers and hitter of note.

Stanton, Santana, and Alvarez homered to start off the season.

Strong showings by Iglasias and Castro – both showing their speed.  It was rumored that the Reds were going to have Yonder Alonso play LF – not sure if he played there in the first game but this would certainly help him get to the bigs faster as Votto has 1B locked up for the foreseeable future (Cincy’s OF is pretty crowded too but Alonso has a better bat than any of them not named Jay Bruce).

On the pitching side, there were some really nice performances by the guys listed above.  Chacin, Montgomery and Friedrich had nice outings with a good K/BB and 0ER.  Drabek had 8K’s in 5IP but allowd 4 runs (including a 2 run HR to Juan Portes in the 1st inning).  Crow and Reckling were alos strong in their 2010 debuts.

Great opening day for the minor leagues – looking forward for more to come.

Please comment for improvements to the daily update – I will try to have one post over the weekend, however, the weekdays will for sure contain the daily updates.
