Minor League Daily Update: Monday

Our Monday group of players has been quite busy with some very notable performances and a promotion to the bigs for Mr. Smoak.  I wrote about him on Friday and what I would expect (currently 0/8 to start but don’t hit the panic button).  From the 19th – 25th (4 games), Smoak was getting on base at an excellent clip – this is where he will shine, his plate discipline.

Below we will check in on some other big names – Jesus Montero, Buster Posey, Dustin Ackley, Stephen Strasburg, Madison Bumgarner, and others.

So Smoak got his call and should be up for good unless he really struggles.  Eric Young Jr. got his name called when Brad Hawpe earned a trip to the DL with a bum quad.  Young is a speedster and could add multi-position eligibility with enough time as he can play an acceptable 2B as well.

Jesus Montero has not been his usual OBP machine this year but is still hitting for plenty of pop.  This past week saw him hit for some power with 2HR – he is good.  Period.  Buster Posey keeps rolling this week and is getting on base at an excellent clip.  I think it won’t be long before he gets the call to San Francisco (pre-All Star break).  Ackley started extremely slow but is heating up a little.  He is in his first professional season, switched positions, and is generally getting acclimated so I think his heat-up is just getting started.  Aaron Hicks had an excellent week showing all his tools – stole a couple of bases and flexed a little power to boot.  He also started slowly but this past week should be more the norm for him moving forward.

Stephen Strasburg was excellent again earning the win with 6K’s to 1BB.  These funny money rules keeping him down – he will be up soon and he will be good.

Hellickson is human afterall – after winning his first 3 starts in dominating fashion, he had a little bit of a stinker this past week.  Madison Bumgarner has shown a lot of improvement in his last couple of showings.  Still not dominating in the K dept. but getting back to limiting runs and got his first win of the year in his last start where he went 5IP with 1ER and 3K.  He also hit at HR to help himself out.  I am looking for his velocity numbers and am hoping that they are in line with the increase seen on the 19th.

Aroldis Chapman was good again with 8Ks in 5 IP but also had 5BB – as soon as he cuts those down, he will get the call and help Cincinnati’s rotation (post All-Star break).  Teheran keeps rolling for the Braves in A-Ball.  I like him for long term investment in keeper leagues.  Look for a late year challenge in AA if he keeps this up [2ER in more than 19 IP so far this year].  Phillippe Aumont was excellent in his last two starts as well.  1ER in 11 IP with 9K’s – looks good to me.  Consistency is the name of the game with young pitchers.
