Thanks to Will Carroll over at Baseball Prospectus for posting the video of the Tom Verducci interview on the MLB network tonight. Verducci discussed his 2010 list of starting pitchers who may suffer from the Verducci Effect. The Verducci Effect looks at starting pitchers who are 25 years of age and under, and who saw a 30 inning increase in 2009 vs 2008. These pitchers usually suffer a drop in performance (ERA, WHIP) or suffer an injury, or both.
Here is his list of pitchers who could suffer from the Verducci Effect in 2010:
Felix Hernandez-SEA
Joba Chamberlain-NYY
Rick Porcello-DET
Max Scherzer-DET
Wade Davis-TB
Josh Johnson-FLA
Homer Bailey-CIN
Mat Latos-SD
Bud Norris-HOU
Verducci looks at innings pitched in the major league, minor league and Arizona Fall League in 2009 vs innings pitched in 2008. I am curious if Diamondbacs GM Josh Byrnes looked at the possible Verducci Effect when he traded Max Scherzer to the Tigers this offseason.
I am also curious how Yankees manager Joe Girardi will handle Joba Chamberlain in 2010
