Down On The Farm: Prospect Chat With Keith Law

On Thursday, ESPN's Keith Law held a prospect chat and here are a few excerpts, with his reason why he is not a big fan of Braves first base prospect Freddie Freeman

Eric (Va)

Why don't you like Freeman? Is it the batting average dependant OBP? Is he going to be a James Loney-type?

  (2:01 PM)

I don't see much power - doubles more than HR - and he's kind of stiff and awkward, not the kind of body I'd typically bet on long term. He's still a top 100 prospect (and was last year), but there are other 1b prospects I prefer.

KLaw ranks Freeman behind first base prospects Eric Hosmer, Brandon Belt, and Anthony Rizzo.

Rich (Philly )

Can Nic Franklin from the M's System be an everyday player in the major's? Will he make the top 100?

  (1:16 PM)

Yes, and yes.

Franklin had a solid 2010 season where he went 23-65-25-.283-.354-.486.

Rank 'em, in terms of power - Harper, Stanton, Montero.

  (1:17 PM)

Just like that. And since Montero's got some pretty good juice, that should tell you how much the other two guys have.

So, one can assume that Harper has 80 power and could be in KLaw's top 5 prospects in 2011. Later in the chat, KLaw stated that there is a 25% chance that Harper gets a cup of coffee in September 2011. He also sees Harper starting out at High-A Potomac for the Nationals.

More after the jump:

Eric (SF)

Resign Huff or hand Belt the starting gig. Slashy stats for next year and peak?

  (1:45 PM)

Of all the fluky Giant hitters from 2010, I'd be most willing to re-sign Torres. I'd let Huff go and give Belt the gig - I don't see much left for him to work on. A conservative peak estimate would be .300/.375/.525.

Wow. Those are very solid "conservative" peak numbers for Belt. I have the 2nd pick in the UBA minor league draft next spring, and am leaning toward taking either Belt or Cardinals third base prospect Zach Cox.

Speaking of Cox:

Jason (Muskegon)

KLaw...what have you thought of Zach Cox so far in AFL? Still think he could be called up mid-2011?

  (1:49 PM)

Yes. I understand they toyed with calling him up for the stretch run this year until they fell out of the race at the end of August. He's not that far off with the stick.

Very interesting that the Cardinals were considering bringing him up this past season. Curious if he makes the Cardinals opening day roster in 2011.

Tyler (BG)

Grandal or Mesoraco as the reds catcher of the future?

  (2:12 PM)

Both have big bats, so it will be interesting to see how the Reds handle the catcher situation in the next year or two. I am curious why the Reds would want to re-sign Ramon Hernandez with these two guys lurking.

A's Fan (Oakland)

^&^(* the Giants. We got 4 rings to their none. 1989. That's how the Bay Area market works

  (2:18 PM)

Well, I'm reasonably certain you didn't post this from the A's stadium, unless you are actually an empty seat.

Gotta love Klaw's humor. Some people don't get him sometimes, but he usually has a few zingers in every chat.

Jon KK (Elkhart, IN)

"Belt, Rizzo, Freeman for the Big Four 1b prospects." If still eligible, where would Logan Morrison slot in this group?

  (2:26 PM)

Behind Hosmer, ahead of Belt. I admit I might be the president of Morrison's fan club, though.

At least he is honest about his allegiance to Morrison, but interesting nonetheless, as some question Morrison's power as well.
