I recently subscribed to Baseball America for six months to keep me busy during the offseason, and saw this question in Wednesday's Pacific Coast League Top 20 chat.
Bryan (Palo Alto, CA.): Posey or Santana? And why?
Jim Shonerd: Wow, really tough call there. I think it's really splitting hair to try to find an edge between the two, but I might lean towards Santana since he's a switch-hitter.
Interesting that Jim likes Santana more even though he covers the Pacific Coast League for BA. I don't put too much weight to his choice here, as both Posey and Santana are outstanding catchers. I could see one or both outperforming Braves catcher Brian McCann in 2011.
Here is a look at their 2010 major league stats, courtesy of Fangraphs:
Posey- 406 ABs, 18 HRs, 67 RBIs, 58 RS, .305-.357-.505
Santana- 150 ABs, 6 HRs, 22 RBIs, 23 RS, .260-.401-.467
And now here is a look at their 2010 minor league stats:
Posey- 172 ABs, 6 HRs, 32 RBIs, 31 RS, .349-.442-.552
Santana- 196 ABs, 13 HRs, 51 RBIs, 39 RS, .316-.447-.597
Santana displayed more power in the minors, but Posey hit for more power in the majors. Santana appears to have a slightly better eye at the plate with his .401 OBP in the majors, following his .447 OBP in AAA.
It's ashame Santana was injured as I am curious if his power numbers would have approached Posey's in the majors. I have a feeling one or both can unseat Twins catcher Joe Mauer as the best catcher in baseball in the next year or two. As a Dodgers fan, I am rooting for Santana, but I do own Posey in one of my NL-only keeper leagues, so I will be rooting for Posey as well. Except when the Giants play the Dodgers.
Who would you rather draft in 2011 fantasy drafts?
