After closer Chad Qualls dislocated his kneecap on the last out of the game yesterday, it appears Juan Gutierrez will be the new closer in Arizona for the rest of the year. But I wouldn't count out Mark "Stink" Schlereth's son, Daniel Schlereth.
Here are their stats:
Player | INN | W | ERA | WHIP | K/9 | BB/9 | G/AO | HR/FB |
Gutierrez, Juan SP ARI | 56.7 | 3 | 4.29 | 1.46 | 8.74 | 4.29 | 0.7 | 0.03 |
Schlereth, Daniel RP ARI | 8.3 | 0 | 7.56 | 1.92 | 11.88 | 8.64 | 2.5 | 0.26 |
Schlereth has the better K/9and GB/FB percentage, but in a very small sample size. Gutierrez was Qualls set up guy before the injury, so I would assume Gutierrez gets the first shot at closing.
But, it would not surprise me to see Schlereth get a few shots, as he is probably a year away from closing for the Diamondbacks. At AA Mobile this year, Schlereth struck out 38 and walked 15 in 25 2/3 innings, with a 1.07 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP.
