If not for an unassisted triple play by 2Bman Eric Bruntlett, Brad Lidge probably would have blown yet another save yesterday against the Mets. In his last 7 outings he has given up 6 runs, 5 earned runs, struck out 5 and walked 5. Lidge has blown 8 saves this season already, and one has to wonder how much longer he will be closing for the first place Philliies.
There a a couple of closers who could become available by the August 31st trade deadline (players must clear waivers before a trade can be completed). Houston's Jose Valverde, Milwaukee's Trevor Hoffman and Cincinnatti's Francisco Cordero all could become available, or should be available as each of their teams are out of the running for the playoffs or wildcard.
Or, the Phillies could turn to setup man Ryan Madson even though he was shakey when Lidge was on the DL earlier this season. Another possibility is former starter Brett Myers as he is on a rehab assignment currently.
This is another closer situation that roto owners should keep an eye on over the next few games to see how Lidge performs in his next save opportunity.
