As long as we're talking about NFL Teams That Are Sick Of Dealing With Crap, we might as well talk about the New York Football Giants, who today released their WR1, Plaxico Burress.
Burress' four-year tenure with the Giants was highlighted by a game-winning touchdown catch in the Super Bowl against the previously undefeated New England Patriots in February 2008, but it was also dogged by fines and suspensions.
Burress' status has been uncertain since he shot himself in the thigh on Nov. 29 with an unlicensed gun he had stuffed into his waistband. He faces a felony weapons charge that could put him in prison for at least 3½ years if convicted.
While some media outlets are calling this move "surprising", it's not. Burress was facing a suspension and possibly jail time. He can probably skate on the jail time, but he's almost certain to see a suspension. I can understand the Giants wanting to move on.
What I can't understand is who the Giants think is going to catch the damn ball. Domenik Hixon? Sinorice Moss? The other Steve Smith? Come on. They let their WR2 last year (Amani Toomer) leave as a free agent and haven't signed anybody to replace him.
Well, the Giants will just run the ball then.
What, Derrick Ward is gone too?
Damn.
Off the top of my head, the Giants have to have one of the worst WR corps in the NFC at this point. I don't know if they're planning to draft a WR or (more likely) bring in a big free agent (Marvin Harrison, Torry Holt) after the draft. But they need to do something or it's going to be a long season for Eli Manning.
