The guys on ESPN's NFL Draft coverage love Mark Sanchez. No, you don't understand, they LOVE Mark Sanchez. They touted him, the complimented him, they stroked him. Then they verbally kissed him, groped him and told him he was the only quarterback for them. It was disgusting. Hopefully Sanchez ran down to the drugstore and picked up some Plan B. Ugh.
And all this over a guy who only started one year in college because he wasn't better than....John David Booty. Yeah, really.
Now a lot of pundits and scouts really like Sanchez. He might turn out to be a great QB some day, but I don't think he's going to be a great fantasy QB this season. Or even a good one. Here's how I see his chances:
PRO - He should be starting for the Jets immediately and as I said about Matt Stafford, there's fantasy value in knowing that a QB is going to start every game.
CON - The Jets are having....wait.
What?
There's only one PRO?
Yes, only one PRO. I said I didn't really like him. Now where was I?
CON - The Jets are having problems getting Thomas Jones into camp and some people even think the Jets could release him. That would leave RB Leon Washington and rookie RB Shonn Greene to carry the load. I'm a huge fan of Leon Washington, but that doesn't seem like a good option for a rookie QB.
CON - The Jets let WR Laveranues Coles leave in free agency. Have they signed a single free agent WR? No. Did they draft a WR? No. Who's going to catch the ball? Jerricho Cotchery and Chansi Stuckey. And TE Dustin Keller. Does that receiving corps sound good to you? Matt Stafford laughs at it.
CON - Fantasy position players from USC have been WILDLY overrated the past few years. Here's a list of the USC alums drafted in the first two rounds since 2004: TE Fred Davis, WR Dwayne Jarrett, WR Steve "The Other One" Smith, RB Reggie Bush, QB Matt Leinart, RB LenDale White, WR Mike Williams, WR Keary Colbert. All those guys were FIRST or SECOND round picks! Terrible!! You can even make the argument that Reggie Bush -- easily the best guy in that list -- was overrated considering Joseph Addai and Maurice Jones-Drew were taken later that year.
Put it all together and I'm not a big fan of Mark Sanchez. I'll wait and see if the Jets anoint him as the starter and if the Thomas Jones thing works out, but right now I'm skeptical.
