David Wright Owners: Are You Worried Yet?

I ws listening to WFAN sports radio yesterday morning and host Craig Carton was bashing Mets 3bman David Wright for his strikeouts and not hiting w/RISP. I was shocked to hear Wright has struck out 23 times in 70 ABs this season. I was even more shocked to see that he is leading the NL in striking out.

To see if this is a normal April for David Wright, I checked out Baseball-Reference.com, which provides roto/fantasy players plenty of hitting stats-by month, by inning, by count, and so on.

Here are Wright's April stats for the years 2005-2009:

AVG OBP SLG OPS HR RBI K BB

2005 .303 .418 .539 .957 4 11 17 14

2006 .303 .377 .584 .962 5 18 13 10

2007 .244 .370 .311 .681 0 6 23 16

2008 .281 .417 .531 .948 4 23 16 23

2009 .271 .370 .371 .742 1 6 23 11

Wright had a bad start to the 2007 season as shown above, but he ended the season hitting .325-.416-.546-.963-30-107-115-94. But you may want to lower your expectation should his slow start continue into May and June.

It remains to be seen how Citifield will play once the warmer weather is here to stay. But should it continue to play like it is currently, Wright won't be the only Mets hitter you want to lower your expectations for.
