Who has been the New York Mets' best hitter this season? Jose Reyes? No. David Wright? Wrong again. Carlos Beltran? Keep guessing. Carlos Delgado? Don't make me laugh. Ryan Church? Yup. He hit his 6th HR last night and leads the regulars with a .328 AVG. (Sadly, the bench, too) His OBP of .394 also leads the Mets luminaries, and his .541 SLG also paces the team. On May 7th, the Mets' OPS leader is the player that was laughed at in the Lastings Milledge "heist" that Nationals' GM Jim Bowden pulled off. (ed: Wasn't the laughed-at player C Brian Schneider?)
Carlos Gomez hit for the cycle and has taken his average to .282. The XBHs are nice, but who wouldn't have dealt the double and triple for a stolen bases or two? This is an obvious difference between real baseball and fantasy baseball. The real baseball fan in me knows Carlos Gomez is a much better player with doubles and triples in his stat line. The fantasy baseball player, though, wants stats in categories that matter more - HRs and SBs.
Seguing into another great performance from yesterday, Cincinnati Reds' rookie 1B Joey Votto hit three HRs in the team's vicotry over the Chicago Cubs. The stampede to add Votto is mixed leagues has likely occurred as he accomplished his feat of power in a day game that allowed everyone to dip into their free agent pool while checking scores last night. From a fantasy perspective, there is nothing worng with adding Votto after the fact. He has surpassed veteran 1B Scott Hatteberg and plays in a homer-friendly home ballpark. FWIW, he also added a SB in addition to the three HRs. It will likely be his best fantasy game of the season.
In the same game, Edinson Volquez struck out 10 Cubs to take over the major-league lead in strikeouts. He is now second overall in ERA with a 1.06. I find it hard to believe he won't come back to Earth as his efforts in texas were too horrible to forget. However, one must get past those memories and accept that a player has made progress. Unlike MLB ERA leader Cliff Lee, Volquez's wlaks are way too high (24 in 42.1 IP) for me to completely believe yet.
