Johan Santana: Temper Expectations

Poor Johan Santana!  There is no way he can get the 20+ wins some touts project for him if he doesn't win games in which he allows just one run.  I never believed the hype of 22 wins as the strategic environment of modern baseball does not allow a pitcher two things.

  1.  Enough starts to get there. 34 starts are not enough to get 20 Wins.
  2.  A reliance on the bullpen that does not allow starting pitchers to go deep enough into games to benefit from late-inning comebacks.
That aside, am I the only one who wondered what the heck Carlos beltran was doing with the bat on his shoulder on an 0-2 fastball down the middle with two outs in the 9th inning?  I flashed back to a similar scene in the 2006 NLCS against Adam Wainwright.
