The analysis of running back touches last week showed an improvement in carries and yards gained along with an increase in the number of RB1, or RB2, who scored a TD increasing also. The average yards gained by the RB!, based on starting assignment, increased to 77 yards per game on 19 carries from 65 yards and 17 carries in Week One. This could be the result of the lack of PT given to starters in the pre-season and just reflects a gradula increase in workload as the RB1s get into regular season mode. It is something to watch in Week Three.
Looking over the Top 10 RB1s by Percent of Touches (%T) shows both New York RBs getting 100% of the RB touches. This does not bode well for Jets' back-up Leon Washington nor injured Giants' RB Brandon Jacobs. While Washington's lack of touches leads to one conclusion, Derrick Ward's 100% role leads me to worry that he has the full confidence of the Giants coaching staff and will not lose that once Jacobs returns. Time will tell.
The surprise amongst the RB1s with a %T of 60% or less is Saints' RB Deuce McAllister. This is the second consecutive week that his %T has been in the low 40% area. Is this a reflection of an awful Saints' defense in Weeks One and Two or is it more of a reflection of a shift towards Reggie Bush as a RB?
