On a night where A's overhyped-now-under-hyped prospect Daric Barton hit his first major league HR and doubled for the third time since being recalled and Reds 1B Joey Votto stole his first base to conjure the days of Jeff Bagwell and his 20+ SBs from a firstbaseman, I began to think of the coming hype for next year's Rookie-of-the-year candidates. To do so, I sorted the hitting stats of players who have fewer than 100 ABs under the assumption that those with more will not qualify because they will pass the 130 AB cut-off before this year ends.
This list looks very solid in terms of accomplishing my goal of pre-empting the impending ROY hype. The issue is determining who on this list will be Delmon Young - over-hyped but relatively productive, or Jeff Baker - a huge flop after a successful September. (The Alex Gordon of 2008 is Tampa Bay's Evan Longoria.)
I know Micah Owings is a pitcher, but his numbers look like he'll win the Silver Slugger at pitcher for years to come!
