Closer Clarity

Florida Marlins

The Marlins are going to stick with Kevin Gregg despite previous closer Henry Owens' almost-return from the DL.  As long as one doesn't subscribe to the belief that players should not lose their jobs due to injury, this makes the most sense.  Gregg has been excellent since taking over 9th inning duties - 3 for 3 in six scoreless and hitless innings with seven Ks.

Oakland A's

A's manager Bob Geren is going to give the majority of the save opportunites to lefty Alan Embree.  While Kevin Gregg has the statistics to justify a permanent role, Embree does not.  A 1.58 WHIP for a lefty does not appear to signal success against right-handed line-ups.  With only 14 Ks in 18.1 innings, he doesn't have the punchout ability to negate that WHIP.

Kansas City Royals

After saying Octavio Dotel will step right into the closer's role after being activated from the disabled list, Royals manager Buddy bell has changed his mind and will ease Dotel back into the job.  This is a switch from the prior days' information.  Could the Royals have recognized that Dotel's value as a reliever is independent of the number of games he closes in this seller' market?
