MLB Rumors: Johan Santana Update, Jason Bay Too!

John Heyman of reports the Mets are trying to get into the Johan Santana competition.  He also writes, "A source close to the Twins said they were awaiting bids from different teams late Tuesday night. Minnesota has continued to talk to Boston into Wednesday morning, but there's a sense they may not be overwhelmed by Boston's multiple offers."

Ed Price of the Newark Star-Ledger writes the Red Sox are acting as if the Yankees are still involved.  This appears to be a logical conclusion.

Ken Rosenthal of says the mariners could be back in on Santana because "the Mariners, rival executives say, are intent on making a splash and acquiring a big-name starting pitcher, with Orioles lefty Erik Bedard another potential target."

On the state of trade discussions with the Red Sox, Mr. Rosenthal writes, "The Red Sox still appear to be the most likely match for the Twins, but while the teams are maintaining a healthy dialogue, a source said they "are just not matching up right now."

John Shea writes the Giants are considering dealing one of their two stud starting pitchers, Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum, to the Blue jays for RF Alex Rios.  Both teams prefer Matt Cain for those looking for a hint about who is considered the better pitcher.

Dejan Kovacevic writes about the return of the Jason Bay to Cleveland rumors.

In a surprising twist, the Pirates and Cleveland Indians revived talks at the Opryland Hotel late last night and developed a framework for a five-player trade, Bay and catcher Ronny Paulino going to Cleveland for outfielder Franklin Gutierrez, catcher Kelly Shoppach and either starter Cliff Lee or a minor-league pitching prospect.
However, Buster Olney reports these talks are dead.  After the Johan Santana fedding frenzy and the Miguel Cabrera trade, I reserve judgment.
