Joe Christensen at the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports some new developments in the Johan Santana trade sweepstakes. 1st, he says the Twins are more focused on landing CF Jacoby Ellsbury. Joining Ellbsury in the Land of 10,000 Lakes would be SS Jed Lowrie, RHP Justin Masterson and a 4th yet-to-be determined player.
2nd, he relates that Kei Igawa was a third piece being discussed with the New York Yankees to be included with Phil Hughes and Melky Cabrera last week. Whether Igawa can get it done or not, the Twins appear to have narrowed their decision down to rebuilding their offense with Ellsbury and Lowrie or adding to the pitching staff with Hughes.
Either way, the Twins will have filled a two of their four holes - SP, 3B, SS and CF.
Finally, he mentions other teams ..."asked the Twins to add a second piece to go with Santana -- including various prospects -- to make it more enticing for those teams to give up major league-ready talent." I don't know about this but Santana will cost his new team a lot.
