The Dodgers placed Nomar Garciaparra on the 15-day DL on Monday with a strained ribcage muscle. Anyone familiar with ribcage injuries knows that they tend to linger, so this move really isn't a surprise.
Unfortunately, Nomar suffered the injury the day before the start of the season in the "Freeway Series" against the Angels, meaning the Dodgers are not able to backdate the move at all.
James Loney was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to take Nomar's place at first base. It bears mentioning that he hit .438 this spring, but he doesn't have traditional corner infield power and hit .284 at Double-A last season, so it's unlikely he will make much noise over the next couple of weeks.
(No, I haven't forgotten about Olmedo Saenz -- from what I gather, the Dodgers like him off the bench as a pinch-hitter. He may start here or there, but I expect Loney to get most of the action.)
