While the Dodgers and A's are still fretting about whether Garciaparra and Crosby will be available soon, the folks in Cleveland already know they'll be without C.C. Sabathia for at least the next 15 days -- the team placed him on the disabled list today with a pulled oblique muscle. He could miss as much as three weeks.
Jason Davis was called up from Triple-A Buffalo to replace Sabathia on the roster. Davis posted a 2-0 record with a 3.31 ERA in 10 appearances this spring. I've always liked Davis (perhaps because I've seen him mow down my Tigers with that 96-MPH fastball), but I've been burnt by his mediocre fantasy numbers before. Truth be told, his career numbers in the minors aren't that hot, either, so I'd recommend just avoiding, instead of giving him a shot and regretting it like I've done all too often in the past.
Indians.com indicates that Davis will be used only in relief, and the Akron-Beacon Journal reports that rookie Fausto Carmona will likely be called up when the Indians need a fifth starter. He's definitely a guy AL-only owners will want to consider taking a shot on. He's averaged better than a strikeout per inning over his minor league career, and as a 21-year-old posted decent stats (3.25 ERA, 1.10 WHIP) in 13 games after being promoted to Triple-A Buffalo. In 12 innings this spring (four appearances, two starts), he allowed just one earned run for a 0.75 ERA.
