The Los Angeles Dodgers And Fantasy Notes From Yesterday

Chin-Lung Hu started at second base for the Dodgers and went 2-3 with a walk.  On the season he has drawn four free passes which, on the surface, is very encouraging for the presumptive starting SS in 2009.  Unfortunately, he has strukc out five times in 18 ABs this year and three of those four walks are of the intentional ilk.

In the same game, RF Matt Kemp hit 7th against the tough right-hander Danny Haren.  I wouldn't be so concerned if the Dodgers had a better right-handed hitter available to hit higher in the line-up, but Nomar Garciaparra batting clean-up is not that hitter.  Granted, the season is just 3.5 weeks old and there is plenty of time for Kemp to mash in the heart of the Dodgers' order, but babying Kemp against right-handed pitchers is a waste when the alternative is Nomar.  nevermind, most pitchers are right-handed and would result in Kemp hitting low in theline-up nearly every night.

Giants' rookie SS Manny Burris stole his first base after being inserted as a pinch-runner and later got his first hit.  Don't know if he is a viable option at SS but he can't be much worse as a hitter than Bocock at .180 can he?

Sticking with the surprisingly good Giants, 2B Eugenio velez stole his 3rd base of the season.  He entered 2008 as the hip sleeper pick for big steals after swiping 16 in Spring Training.  Somehow his 2008 totals can't help but be considered disappointing.  Yet I recall the fantasy rule-of-thumb that players didn't begin stealing bases until the weather warmed.  Is that still true?

Minnesota Twins' CF Carlos Gomez is hitting .230 after a massive 6-44 slump.  He was given last night off for "a breather" according to manager Ron Gardenhire.  With RF Michael Cuddyer coming off the DL on Friday, I wouldn't be shocked to see Gomez sent to AAA and Denard Span given a reprieve.  All reports claim the opposite, but people change their minds in baseball all the time.

To snap the SB meme, Colorado Rockies' closer MannY Corpas blew another save last night.  His manager Clint Hurdle immediately expressed reservations about Corpas' continuance in that role. A safe move for fantasy players would be to roster Brien Funtes - last year's closer who lost the job due to an injury.  Why Hurdle would be so quick with the hook is a different issue although I am sure Milwaukee Brewers' fans are wishing Ned Yost would get a little more antsy with his closer.

Kemp
hitting 7th is better than sitting with Pierre playing LF.
I agree though....Torre needs to give the guy a chance against RHers. Kemp k'd on a check swing in the 1st to end the rally with 2 men one. Then he came up again and flied out to the warning track in RF. He knocked in LA's 4th run with a single to LF, and later doubled-the only extra base hit for LA on the night.
His power is obvious, and with Jones struggling, Torre needs to hit him higher in the order, providing a power bat in the middle of the lineup. Kent is not a power hitter anymore....well, not a 30 HR power hitter. Kemp could be that in short order given the chance.
What will make Torre a beleiver, I don't know. Nomar is not a 3rd place hitter or a clean-up hitter, that's for sure. He did have a few good ABs though.
Hu looked good at the plate. He will be sent down to AAA soon, when they pick up Juan Castro to be the reserve MI, thus giving Hu the chance to play everyay in AAA.

What I want to see
is an OF of Pierre, Kemp, and Ethier, with Andruw Jones on the bench.

Jones just looks lost, and he's making Pierre relatively look like the big bat. Scary, I know. Pierre has twice as many RBIs in part-time duty, and for all his faults, he's doing what he's always done.

Velez
I had Velez early on. I dropped him based on this comment indicating that pitchers are capitalizing on a hole in his swing.

Who has the most value going forward among
Fuentes, Acosta, or Rauch.  Each could become his team's permanent closer, or be valueless.  Appreciate your thoughts.

Raush
my 2 cents.  He has the job now, and Cordero looks bad.  Acosta also has the job but Soriano is coming back and Mike Gonzalez not too far behind him.  Funetes could get the job but this is a contract year for him so he could get traded (if so, he'll most likely be a setup man then)

Rauch
I'll take Rauch.  Even though Cordero's shoulder came back fine enough from a visit to Dr. Andrews in Birnmingham, AL, I am not convinced yet.  Chad has to fight through his own belief.

Acosta seems to have the job until Soriano or Gonzalez come back although neither of those are 100% right now - Soriano to come back and MGonz to be effective.

Fuentes could keep the job all year if he is successful.  Just look how Hurdle kept Corpas there last season despite Fuentes' healthy return.

Thought regarding Giants...
I will continue to stick to my pre-season opinion that it is the least talented team I have ever seen, and that the only rosterable players in a mixed shallow league as Cain and Lincecum (decent pitchers but won't get any wins) and catcher Molina.

Corpas
Hurdle has relieved Manny Corpas of his closing duties and reinstalled Fuentes at closer.  Not sure if it is a panic move or a permanent one though

Corpas
Hurdle is killing me.....Rotoworld does make a good argument that Corpas just got a 4 yr deal....so he could be back in the closers spot once he figures out his issues....I can only hope. I have him in all 3 of my leagues.
I need a closer in UBA now.

Acosta
I wonder if he will have the job longer than most people think?
$26 for Rajai Davis??? wow....I thought me keeping him at $10 was a stretch based on his playing time.

Heilman
gives up another HR tonight...a grand slam in the 6th inning....it appears he is no longer the set up man.

Mets bullpen
has given up three of the four grand slams hit in the NL this year.  Heilamn is clearly struggling.

Unfortuantely for me, I have him and Oliver Perez and Joahn Santana so i get triply screwed as Heilamn gives up HRs with Johan and OP's inherited runners on base.

The Clown
is at it again...batting Kemp 8th tonight  vs that tough RHer Edgar Gonzalez...give me a freakin break, Joe.
Go back to NY....or STL....or ATL....or maybe the Mets may need a new mgr soon....Little knew how to write out a lineup card...Torre does not....but he gets paid alot....for what, I do not know.

Vin
Scully is even befuddled as to why Kemp is batting 8th.

What's that sound?
$15MM more of the McCourts money being flushed down the toilet in the form of Torre's three-year contract.
