The Worst Fantasy Baseball Season Contest

Update [2008-4-30 6:22:43 by Eric Hz]: This will stay at the top of the page all day. New posts will be below this.

To a man, woman, site, magazine and podcast, fantasy experts advise fantasy owners to ignore the horror that April brings to fantasy teams and prepare your roster for the May push where performance sample sizes increase to provide a more solid basis for informed fantasy decisions.  Is there any better time for Fake Teams and Baseball Prospectus to team up and help the beleaguered fantasy owner with the tools necessary to right that sinking ship you call your fantasy team?

No!  Starting today and running through April 30, Fake Teams and Baseball Prospectus will award the most awful 2008 fantasy horror story with an annual subscription to Baseball Prospectus.  In addition to full access to Will Carroll's "Under The Knife" column, fantasy owners with be able to access the PECOTA player cards, and spreadsheet, along with Will's Team Health Report Matrix in BP's Fantasy section.

You also get the Team Tracker feature which "allows users to define rosters for up to 25 teams and get convenient, up-to-date reports on their 2008 performance and trends," and the Depth Charts which provide "careful estimations of playing time based on our objective estimates and accounting for as many subjective factors as possible" to help you determine who to target to make your fantasy team better.

If that isn't enough, you will be able to keep up-to-date with the hottest minor league prospects with Kevin Goldstein's "Future Shock: Monday Ten Pack" which highlights ten minor leaguers and/or college players who have to be on the radar for the forward-looking fantasy owner.

To enter, you must have a Fake Teams user account (sign-up here and submit your 2008 fantasy horror story in the Comment section.  If you're afraid someone may "steal" your experience, email it to me via Contact Fake Teams in the upper right corner of the website.  Once the winner is determined, there must be some sort of proof that you, in fact, had the team that inflicted the horror.

May your bad luck in April turn into good luck in May thanks to Fake Teams and Baseball Prospectus!

I am receiving entries via email so do not misinterpret tha lack of entries in this Comment section.

Got less than 30 points in a 10- or 12-team league?  You likely qualify to be amongst the worst fantasy Aprils.

Worst April
I'll just list it:
-Drafted Lackey 10 minutes before they posted his injury
-Granderson's broken finger
-Jeter missed 5 games with Quad injury
-Victorino's blown calf
-Adam Dunn, awful
-Sizemore, doing nothing
-Kelly Johnson's knee injury and lack of production
-traded Torii hunter for Rich Hill
-Kevin Sloweys' forearm
-Had Heilman in there for all of his nonsense
-Picked up Moylan for the 1 save
-Had Howry, you know how he's doing
-currently in last with 56 pts in a 12 team league, 110 pts out of first place

My April joys
Let's see -- my keepers on my only keeper team in the league that I've commished for a dozen years include Scott Kazmir and Erik Bedard, which means Andy Sonnanstine and the resurgent Daniel Cabrera have thrown some innings for me. Justin Verlander has also helped keep the pitching numbers in the toilet.

Besides the throwers what make me throw up, my other keepers included Carlos Beltran, a pair of dirty Hunter Pence, Nick "I only score runs" Swisher, Kelly Johnson, Kenji Johjima and Troy Tulowitzki. This in a mixed league where 384 players are owned and we only get one free agent every three weeks, so my I've been mixing Johjima and Tulo with their equally awful backups, Chris Synder and JJ Hardy.

Mercifully, Magglio and Miggy Cabrera are showing some life.

And I can only blame myself for assembling the bullpen of lost souls -- Brad Lidge, Kevin Gregg  and Troy Percival, the latter two of which could become middle relievers in the blink of a trade.

Not my team
We have an expansion team in a 12-team NL 4x4 ultra with 10 pitchers. As of today he has 4 active pitchers due to his lack of movement. After drafting Schmidt, Mike Gonzalez, and Prior [DL], he had Smoltz go down and Dave Bush and Chuck James get farmed out. His offense is not much better with Wigginton, Chad Tracy, Jack Wilson, Dave Roberts, and Elijah Dukes all on the DL. Suffice to say he has quickly sunk to the bottom of the standings. He is 15 points behind 11th place. He would be even farther behind if it wasn't for Eric Gagne's 7 saves giving him 1/3 of his total points.
His pathetic offense has 6 points thanks to his blistering .230 BA. He is being weighed down by Durham (.234), Treanor (.214}, Feliz (.202), Andruw Jones (.159), Adam LaRoche (.164), and stolen base leader Jim Edmonds (.164). That's a combined 428 ab and 78 hits, almost a full player season of .182 and 7, 32, 3.

worst april 2008 experience
in a 4X4 AL only long time keeper league that auctioned 4/5, by april 23, 18 days later, 2 of my endgame $1 players, jimerson and bazardo, were DFA and 6, harden, westbrook, foulke, morse, bedard, and byrd were on the DL. OUCH. leaving my pitching with only  one starter, nate robertson to anchor my staff. right now i'm in last place in wins and HR's with 6 wins and 16 HR's in four weeks, and second to last in RBI's 60 behind the leader. more OUCH. with each team also drafting a 10 player reserve list, the only available replacements are the bottom of the barrel relievers...not a starter in sight...it will be a long, long season...

My team
  • A-Rod on the DL
  • Smoltz on the DL
  • Posada on the DL
  • Rafael Soriano on the DL
  • Curtis Granderson was on the DL
  • Tulowitzki injured + hitting .150
  • David Ortiz, Carlos Pena, and Rickie Weeks all hitting .200 or below, with Ortiz missing a few games due to injury
  • Rich Hill being relegated to spot starts
  • Having a no-maximum FA pick-ups rule unjustly changed by the commissioner after I had committed to a strategy of streaming starters
  • The rule was enforced mid-week, after I had already passed the pick-up limit, leaving me unable to add players such as Upton and Cueto in the first week of the season
.... sigh

My regrets for no entry
There are alot of good entries and should be hard to decide......

My relationship to the Chief Editor of "Faketeams" I can not make an entry. Just know that I have had the worse April in our 12 year history AL Only 4X4 Keeper.  Just two days ago I had 13 points, the lowest possible being 8 points, highest being 144.,....A lot has to go wrong to have 13 points on 4/28.

Notable Notes and Players>
Opening day stats:
3 inn 13 Er 17 runners
0 Hrs 3 rbi .200
Halladay 4 CG 1 decision
Buerhle opening day killed me, not much better since
No closer
Kenny Rogers
Sheffield hurts finger on day 3 not the same.1 hr 2 rbi and .180 avg before yesterday.
Cuddyer same injury on day 4 goes on DL

and a whole lot of other .150 hitters and bombing from the likes of Fukmori, Dotel, guerrior(traded before getting better) for the month.
