Spring Training Boxscores: Fantasy Notes

  • Brandon Inge started at catcher for the Tigers.  I think he'll be dealt but would really prefer he stay in Detroit and gain catcher-eligibility to deepen that position's pool.
  • Denard Span goes 0-4 and drops his Spring AVG to .227. Is this why pundits say Spring Training stats are meaningless?
  • Chris Duncan is now hitting .050 this Spring.  See above comment or is this a real concern?
  • Any chance the Red Sox released C Doug Mirabelli because they want to break George Kotteras in?  Kevin Cash's offense is so bad chasing Tim Wakefield's knuckleball around for 6 innings can't possibly make-up for his offense, can it?
  • Erick Aybar hit his 1st Grapefruit League HR.  I'm ready to call the SS contest for him.  I am concerned he has just one SB attempt.  He barely ran for the Angels last season, too (4-8).
  • Brandon Wood went 0-2 with two Ks.  He has struck out 13 times so far and has a .071 AVG.  Stick a fork in him.
  • Josh Hamilton is hitting .577.  See the comment abotu Spring stats for Denard Span.  Does it still apply?

wrote recently about Hamilton saying he doesn't miss very many fastballs. I think he's for real, and I never heard of the other guy.

LA apparently is not going to look outside the organization for a 3bman to replace Nomar Laroche...good news for Laroche owners.

Another Concern
Corey Hart's BB/K this spring. It droped from .5 to .25 after the All-Star Break last season. I haven't see Thursday's results yet but he came in with a 0/11 line...

he's killing me
Cameron Maybin hit a two-run homer off Saul Rivera in the top of the ninth to boost the Marlins to a 2-1 win over the Nationals on Thursday night.

Maybin's two homers on Wednesday may have been wind-aided, but he delivered a key blast in a low-scoring game tonight. The Marlins have been giving serious thought to sending him back to the minors for a while, but it's putting together a nice case for being their everyday center fielder.

He is certainly making a case to start the year in Fla. Is this the right call for a 20 year old OFer who has had just a handful of ABs above A ball? If yes, is it considered a bad move to make Kershaw the 5th starter in LA as a 20 yr. old?

+1
You've got a point even though I expect near-unanimity in the the point that neither should begin the season in the majors.  Maybin was acquired for a high price so I am not surprised that the Marlins would want to realize some return.  Frankly, if he continues to hit (and hit it is as he hasn't walked yet), then he should begin in the majors.  he'd have earned it.

As for Kershaw, if he is going to start, he needs lots of innings.  Being a reliever to start the season with the Dodgers should be out of the question.  If they want him as the number 5, then send him to the minors to be a #1 to get regular work.
