Doh! Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis Traded!

Just hours after Ken Rosenthal broke the news that the Florida Marlins and the Detroit Tigers were engaged in trade discussions revolving around Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis going to Detroit for Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin, the trade occurs.  In addition to Miller and Maybin, the Tigers are getting catcher Mike Rubello and three minor league pitchers.

While this appears to be much less than what the Angels had to pay for Cabrera alone, the names of the minor league pitchers may change that.  I have a hard time believing it unless one of those players is a PTBNL who will be named one year after he signed his first professional contract.  That PTBNL would be Mike Porcello.

That doubt aside, is this how the Marlins addressed their catching situation?  They use their two biggest trading chips to get Mike Rubello?  I wonder if the team decided it could live with another year of Miguel Olivo.

I am curious now whether this trade makes the Angels serious players for Johan Santana or any other player of that caliber? With the readiness to deal Howie Kendrick et all, you have to think the team could get almost any player they would like.

is it me or
did the Marlins accept less than they were asking from the Dodgers and Angels, and threw in Willis to boot!!!
Eric might be right, this deal makes no sense unless Porcello is part of the deal, but even then....they wanted 3-4 guys from both LA teams for just Cabrera!!

Porcello
can't be part of this deal. He is on the Tigers roster for a minimum of 1 tear per the CBA. As a PTBNL, he would have to be on the roster for  a minimum pf 6 months then, he could be dealt at the anniversary. But that scenario doesn't fit either. So no Porcello.

The three
Dallas Trahern, Eulogio De La Cruz and Burke Badenhop.

Right now, the trade seems unexplainable base don the asking price given the two LA teams.

the only reason I can think
is that Beinfest gave his former team a discount. I think I read that he used to be in the Detroit organization, correct me if I'm wrong.
Maybe a "I'll scratch your back, you scratch mine" deal for the future.

His name is Rick Porcello
Amd he was rated as the #2 pitching prospect in this years amateur draft. The reason he dropped all the way to the Tigers at 27 was signability, and that was proven when Porcello's representation, The Boras Group, (yes, that guy), secured a Josh Beckett like $7MM major league deal for him. On the 20-80 scale, he rates out as a 70 FB, and has a 12-6 hammer curve that he can bury in the dirt when he is looking for a strikeout or can locate on the corners. With a third average changeup, he is what Josh Beckett was when he was drafted, and belongs in the same conversation as David Price and projects as a future #1. He'll make his first appearance in Det as a late season callup, a la Andrew Miller, in '08, and could challenge for a full time gig come 2010.
