New York Yankees: Alex Rodriguez, Joe Girardi and Joe Torre

The big news this morning is not the Red Sox winning their second World Series in four seasons, but Alex Rodriguez's decision to opt out of the remaining three years and $91 MM remaining on his contract to test the free agent market.  I think ESPN's Peter Gammons summed-up the initial reactions nicely this morning.  He said, and I paraphrase, Dustin Pedroia and Jon Lester are celebrating a World Series, and Alex Rodriguez has never played in one.  Maybe there's a reason for that.

Those are extremely harsh words more appropriate to the blogosphere than from the national baseball reporter for ESPN.  If Gammons feels that way, I can't wait for the scorching of the Earth in the local New York papers and media.

In other Yankees news, the team appears to have settled on Joe Girardi as its new manager.  I reviewed what a Girardi managerial tenure would look like for the Dodgers and hold it would look the same for the Yankees.  Most criticsm will center around whether or not Girardi's one year of abusing the Marlins' young pitchers will continue with the Yankees' young guns.

Finally, the New York Post reports the Dodgers want to bring Joe Torre in to manage due to the schism between the veteran and young players.  Hopefully, Torre could fix the situation as that is what is he most lauded for during his Yankees' tenure.  I just wonder if his reputation would take the same hit that pitching coach Leo Mazzone's did when he left Atlanta as the greatest pitching coach in the  world - and was fired a couple years later when the staff didn't improve.

Really?
So the entire reason they play the season is unimportant compared to a Yankee player opting out of his contract? Sure, why not.

Have you ever considered changing the name of the blog to onlytheteamsericgivesashitabout instead of faketeams? Does kind of have a catchy ring to it right?

Mention
Didn't I mention the Sox won the WS?  Isn't that enough?  :)

Rays fans' thoughts on the Yankees.
Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na Na

Hey Hey Hey

Goodbye!

With A-Rod gone and a possible young pitcher killer being hired by the Yankees, it's going to be fun how the yankees are allegedly going to "re-load".

I'm sick of hearing stupid ass rumors on how they'll look to trade for Santana and Miguel Cabrera and pretty much offer chump change rather than ponying up by offering real prospects and hitters. Melky? Kennedy? What the hell?

I hope that the Minnesota Twins and Marlins are smart enough to demand the world.

Deserved
I'm sure there are 28 other teams with the same feeling.

The Great thing is...
For the last few years, the Rays have played the Yankees very close and have split or won the season series in 2 out of the last 3 season series. If I recall, all 3 of those Yankees teams has A-Rod playing for them.

Unless they mortgage the farm system/future for Johan, I'd be worried about the Rays soon-to-be constant onslaught of good homegrown talent coming to the majors. I know that all the Rays prospects won't pan out in the majors, but we've got the depth to not really worry about all of those prospects being busts.

Unless Boston buys A-Rod, the AL East's best 3B will be a rookie named Evan Longoria.

by Jake on Oct 29, 2007 12:56 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Soon
I worry he'll go Alex Gordon in 2008 and not be the best AL East 3B until 2009.

by faketeams on Oct 29, 2007 1:20 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I dunno
The Rays' farm system management and coaching staff are better than they get credit for. If they believe Longoria to be "ready" for the majors, he's going to put together a nice rookie season without the hype(he's not playing for a nationally known team). He's also had to work his way to prove himself since HS, unlike Gordon who has basically had everything handed to him.

But Jake ...
Maybe you see more optimism than the casual fan, but the Devil Rays never seem to get out of the cellar. What's the logic behind that? I don't want to sound too down on your Rays, but assuming Upton and Young hit at last years levels consistently, and they sign Pena, when do Longoria and Brignac pan out? Let's put a conservative estimate on the table and say 2010. That means they'll have to pay Pena a fair salary with the hope that he'll still be hitting 40 dingers at 32 years old. They'll have to exercise Crawford's $10 Million option. Upton and Young would be arbitration eligible at the sametime, along with Kazmir and Shields!!

Niemann, McGee, Davis, Price -- there's some fearful names there, but many D-Ray pitching names have been drafted that haven't panned out ......

They gonna have the money? That's quite a young, homegrown gamble if you ask me. Why don't they trade? Why don't they go after notable free-agents instead of the "suited for the graveyard"-types?

by boogeyman on Oct 29, 2007 3:36 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Unless
Well, first off. I write about the Rays for a blog and I know alot more about the Rays than the common fan.

Upton and Young are only going to improve on 2007, seeing as they're both young and both still getting their feet wet in the majors. Upton had only gotten a september call-up and a bit of an extended run in 2006 before getting a full-time gig in 2007. He'll either be our starting 2B or CF next year(both positions, he showed promise in). Young may have had a disappointing season to some people's standards, but he still almost had 100 RBIs and the power is coming(as evidence of the 35+ doubles and some of the distances of his HRs). For a guy who swings at everything like Delmon does, a .288 undisciplined hitter is going to be scary when he starts taking pitches.

As for Pena, who many people call a mirage. He's always had the power but his K rates always killed him. He managed to take more pitches and increased his walk rate to make up for the whiffs. He's had multiple 20+ HR seasons, which came in trunicated seasons. If he continues to play full seasons, 35 HRs isn't out of the question. Also, his walk totals are sure to go up with our youngsters improving.

It's funny how you listed Rays-drafted pitchers and said that many have been busts. However, Dewon Brazelton and Matt White have been our only 1st round flops in our short history. While I realize all our top prospects won't make it to the rotation of the Rays, I'm sure Niemann and Davis/McGee will have decent careers as relievers.

Instead of the 1st 8 years of the Rays existence, the new Rays ownership has been secretive on their offseason plans and have done pretty well for themselves. Akinori Iwamura, Brendan Harris, Al Reyes, Scott Dohmann and Carlos Pena are a few of their low-cost "finds".

by Jake on Oct 29, 2007 6:38 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well
I didn't say Niemann, Davis, Price, et al were busts at all. I was saying that that is one hell of a gamble to have those 6 starters expected to be part of a Championship team, and that there's been a track record of "busts" in the system with regard to pitchers.

I'm wondering if the Devil Rays front office will ever open the check book and sign someone at that point where they're ready to break out of the cellar. 'Cause let's face it, they have only finished better than last in the AL East once in their existence. Will the Kazmir trade be the last one? They probably could have traded Brazelton prior to his break down! They should be able to recognize, at some point, when a player is going to be a bust - trading those players is a strategy they have never employed.

And, their bullpen is horrendous! The Rays were 2nd to last in Save Opps and dead last in bullpen ERA with a 6.16 ERA.

by boogeyman on Oct 30, 2007 12:05 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Tend to agree
The Devil Rays have wasted talent while showing no improvement form season to season.  The teams does draft well but something happens to them once they join to big club.

by faketeams on Oct 30, 2007 7:13 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Really?
Before 2003, which was the 6th year of existence for the team, the team's best homegrown talents were Aubrey Huff and Toby Hall(I choke just reading myself write that). Crawford was only starting to show promise and wasn't turning into a full-fledged stolen base threat for another year or so.

What other great talents have we had?

Jesus Colome? Jorge Sosa? Julio Lugo? Jared Sandberg? Joey Gathright? Nick Green? Victor Zambrano? Mark Hendrickson?

The closest thing to a great talent was Julio Lugo, who we basically lucked into a situation. Houston didn't want the distraction of having a wifebeater on the team and we basically picked up his contract for nothing. He turned out to be no more than a poor-range slap-hitter for us, something he appeared to be as a Red Sox player as well.

Now, which players do you speak of that busted when they got to the big club?

by Jake on Oct 30, 2007 11:43 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Could've gone with Hammel, but you didn't
Cantu was always a flawed hitter, no matter what his 27 HR, 117 RBI season appeared to be(a mirage to most, due to his lack of taking walks and knack for grounding into double plays at annoying rates.) He was a statue defensively and when he got injured, his power got sapped. Had he improved on his 2005 season in 2006, rather than get proven to be a horrible hitter, he would've had a future in St. Pete.

However, most Rays fans wonder how he went from being a mediocre hitter in his first few years as a 16 year old NDFA and all of a sudden he became a bigger, stronger powerful hitter. Maybe George Mitchell knows something about Cantu that we've all believed he did.

As for Gomes, Gomes has Pena-like power(25-30 HRs in a full season) but he's a horrible fielding outfielder and chases everything low and away. His rookie year was great because pitchers weren't used to him, but he did himself in coming bulked up in 2006. His speed got sapped and his shoulder fell apart. Gomes may be ran out of a job next year, if the Rays believe Rocco is worth keeping and better saved as a DH until his legs are stong enough.

I'd like for you guys to give a better debate, but you're throwing meatballs and crappy players.

The only true top prospects that the Rays have had on their big league rosters have been:

Upton, Delmon, Crawford, Baldelli Huff and Hall.

Only Hall showed that he could've live up to his hype. The rest of the players that have made it have done positive things for the Rays.

by Jake on Oct 30, 2007 3:22 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Jake, you shouldn't
Call out people when your team does not have a history of doing anything other than getting plaudits from Sickels and Baseball America on their drafting ability. Let's take a look at this from an inverse direction and then you can understand why it is so easy to call out the Rays or D-Rays or whatever it is they want to be called.

The goal of every team is to reach the World Series. To do that, you need three things:

1.)Core players that play and follow management's unwritten philosophy.
Examples: Jason Varitek, Scott Rolen, Jim Edmonds, Jorge Posada, Derek Jeter

2.) Solid, if unspectacular, pitching. Tigers had it last year, Red Sox had it in 04 and 07, hell even Colorado up until running into the Red Sox if you are looking at the NL for an example.
          Examples: Beckett, Schilling, Bonderman, Carpenter

3.) A mix of younger and fringy players that somehow are effectively mixed in, and very importantly, play an integral role, by the skipper.
Examples: David Eckstein, Nate Robertson, Chad Qualls, Jacoby Ellsbury

The point that I am making here is that when you analyze the playoff rosters of all the playoff teams through the last 5 years, they all have these common threads. You flaming people out because they don't have your expertise on the Rays is not what this argument is about. Rather, the argument should be focused on these things:

1.) The need on the roster for a veteran who has established himself in the clubhouse as a consummate professional, and one of the players who is most like one of the players I mentioned in #1. Not easy because they have things that can't be measured, but with the talent they have, they ought to be able to get someone who can show the kids how the game is played every day and will make them understand the definition of "consumate professional". Mike Lowell and Aaron Rowand would work well here.

2.) Acquire a front line starter who is a proven winner. Give up prosects if you have to, because you have waaaay to many for roster balance and true competitive integrity. Don't spend one minute on guys like this:
        Ex: Kurt Birkins, Grant Balfour
It gives your team a reputation as a dumping ground and doen't help your team all that much
This winter, there isn't much, but the way I would approach it is with two words in my mind: Johan Santana. 3 pitching prospects ought to do it, and make sure you sign him to an extension before you do the deal as well, because he would give your organization instant credibility, and ticket sales would instantly boom to offset the costs of the largest contract in team history.

3. Keep drafting the way you do, because your drafting philosphy will allow you to fill 7-8 roster spots every year at minimum dollars and allow the players to earn the postseason experience where they should - at the periphery.

I hope this really rights this "debate" for you while at the same time giving your organization the ability to see what successful organizations perform on an everyday basis.

Well
Jake - You can't win. The Devil Rays have always sucked and you have no basis for an argument. Prospects don't make a club! And, I have to disagree with Eric -- I don't think the Devil Rays know how to draft one bit! A helmet wearing, drool cup carrying moron can manage their team to last place every year and end up drafting the #1 pick year in, year out! They do absolutely nothing with the rest of their picks, and quite frankly Elijah Dukes is despicable human - and Young and Upton cried their way to the majors! They don't exactly help their clubs (errors, strikeouts) they just happen to get a hit once in a while, albeit out of the park sometimes.......

Nor do they know how to hang on to players. Andrew Miller (opted out and went back to school) - Mike Pelfrey (re-drafted) -- among others!

Baldelli isn't exactly turning out to be a gem, Huff never won them anything - they couldn't even manage to trade the guy before the deadline in his free agent year.

In fact, everyone is a bust! Crawford too! How the hell can you say Crawford, Huff, Hall and anyone else that's entered their system legitimizes them as a ball club - THEY'RE IN LAST EVERY YEAR! They can't fill their seats, noone routes for them but Jake, their uniform colors and logos show up on the twisted heads of gangsta's more often than baseball fans, and the words "Tampa Bay Devil Rays" show up on every short list of no-trade clauses!!

That is despicable!!!!!!!!!! And, routing for them makes you a terrorist!

by boogeyman on Oct 30, 2007 9:00 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If I'm a terrorist
Then Baseball Prospectus and other baseball sites with decent-sized followings applaud the Rays beyond their drafting philosophies. Does that mean BP, BA and others support terrorism?

We couldn't trade Huff? Um, he got traded to Houston in 2006.

Crawford is a bust, yet every year he shows up in the 1st rounds of 99% of fantasy drafts. Kinda funny how he's a bust, huh?

Arod's move was certainly classless.  I still don't understand why his agent felt the need to do it during last night's game.

A-Rod - Who gets him for 2008???
So, my money is definitely on San Francisco, The Giants need a replacement for Barry Bonds to fill the seats, and wouldn't it be ironic for Rodriguez's chase of Bonds' career home run mark to take place in San Francisco? Although I found a betting line that has the Chicago Cubs as favorite to sign him, but with the Cubs' unknown ownership situation might make it tough to offer A-Rod the big bucks without knowing who will sign the checks.
