Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips will miss the rest of the 2008 season with a broken right index finger.
The injury occurred in the same at-bat in which he delivered a game-winning single to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers, 5-4, Tuesday night.
Phillips was batting with runners on first and third with two outs in the 11th inning against Seth McClung, and he attempted to bunt on the first pitch. The injury apparently took place on the attempt, but Phillips showed no signs of having broken his finger.
The second baseman returned to Cincinnati on Wednesday to be examined by the team's medical staff.
In 141 games this season, the 27-year-old is batted .261 with 21 homers and 78 runs batted in. Last year he posted a 30/30 season, hitting .288 with 30 homers and 32 stolen bases.
