Phillips breaks finger, probably out for season

Sports Network | September 10, 2008

Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips broke his right index finger in the same at-bat in which he delivered a game-winning single to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers, 5-4, Tuesday night.

Phillips was batting with runners on first and third with two outs in the 11th inning against Seth McClung, and he attempted to bunt on the first pitch. The injury apparently took place on the attempt, but Phillips showed no signs of having broken his finger.

The second baseman will fly home to Cincinnati Wednesday to be examined by the team's medical staff.

In 141 games this season, the 27-year-old is batting .261 with 21 homers and 78 runs batted in. Last year he posted a 30/30 season, hitting .288 with 30 homers and 32 stolen bases.
