By Paul Daugherty • pdaugherty@enquirer.com • June 21, 2009

DAYTON, Ohio – The Reds’ offensive woes could ease this week, if Joey Votto has his way. Votto has been on the disabled list since May 29, with what the club termed "stress-related’’ issues. But after a two-game, weekend stint with the Class A Dayton Dragons, the first baseman said Sunday he was ready to return to the big-league club, perhaps as early as Tuesday in Toronto.

"I felt great out there,’’ said Votto. In two games with the Dragons, Votto had three hits, a home run and three RBI. More importantly, Votto said, was being able to play consecutive, nine-inning games without having to leave the game.

Think Stephen Strasburg got hyped? Meet Bryce Harper, the top prospect for the 2011 draft... oh wait, make that 2010. Over the weekend it was announced that Harper, who just finished his sophomore year at a Canyon Springs High School, is done with that whole prep thing and will begin working toward his GED with the intent of enrolling in junior college next fall. That will technically make him draft-eligible next year, but there will be a hearing on the gambit sometime soon. Without question, Harper is a legitimate mega-talent, despite the aggrandized and at times apocryphal stories of his baseball prowess. Another Scott Boras soap opera is sure to follow, but more importantly, Harper's certainly a player worth watching.

Another Take on the McLouth Trade

Jim (CT): I know you are going to talk draft, but can you give us a quick opinion on the McLouth to Atlanta deal?

Keith Law: (1:09 PM ET ) Like it a lot for Pittsburgh - Morton could go right in their rotation, Gorkys is a ++ defender with a chance to hit (he hasn't been good this year but he's also 21 in AA), Locke is a high-upside LHP with three pitches who has shown good feel and command in the past. That's a lot of talent - and difficult-to-get talent, since players up the middle and LHP are hard to acquire in trade or free agency - for a guy who is, what, an average outfielder? Fringe-average? Since 6/1/08 McLouth has hit .256/.327/.447 if you exclude his 7 IBB, and he's not good in CF.

Matt Wieters (0 DXL)
Today's the day and I figured that I should at least address Wieters. Wieters may be the rebirth of the Orioles or PECOTA's Waterloo, but we do know that he's going to be the ultimate test of the tall catcher problem. Along with Joe Mauer, whose leg problems can in some ways be attributed to his height, Wieters is one of very few catchers over 6'3". Keith Law was the first to mention this that I can remember, though I'm sure it had been addressed elsewhere. His ideas on it (he was against at the time, though I'm not sure if he still is) got me to ask some of my father's students to test it. They did some calculations and physical tests and, yes, there is more stress on the knees and hips during all phases of the crouch. Testing the muscles' response was more difficult, but the additional stresses didn't seem to speak well there. I've long been for moving Mauer from behind the plate, and if Wieters is as good, I'll be an advocate of moving him as well. Not completely, but both play in the AL and that DH slot should be used for more than just hiding a glove. Now, let's all hope that this is the last time that I have to put Wieters' name in UTK.

ESPN's Rob Neyer on whether Johan Santana is the best pitcher in the majors

Is he the best...

ESPN's Rob Neyer on whether Johan Santana is the best pitcher in the majors

Is he the best pitcher in the game today? Gee, I don't know. When you consider the difference between the leagues, I suspect that the argument comes down to three pitchers: Santana, CC Sabathia, and Roy Halladay. Well, and Lincecum, and maybe Chad Billingsley, too.

If you choose Santana, I probably can't find any objective standard to argue that you're wrong. But I'm not sure you'd be right, either.

Strasburg Update

The Nationals likely will keep Strasburg in the minors for most of whatever...

Strasburg Update

The Nationals likely will keep Strasburg in the minors for most of whatever length of time they have him this year, a club source said Monday. Though there's a possibility Strasburg could make a late-season appearance to draw some attention - like Ross Detwiler did in 2007 - Washington likely will wait until 2010 before inserting him into the starting rotation.
