Top Ten Pass Defenses: Green Bay Packers V Tennessee Titans

The Green Bay Packers have the third best PYA over the last the games, and one shouldn't expect that to change too much after this week's game against the Tennessee Titans. The Titans' passing game is led by QB Kerry Collins and a bunch of players who line-up as wide receivers. Where the Titans are strong is at RB with rookie Chris Johnson and LenDale White. Unfortunately, the Packers are as bad at stopping the run as they are at preventing the pass.

While one would expect Johnson and White to get theirs, the Packers will have to hope QB Aaron Rodgers can continue to carry the team despite a tender right shoulder. The Titans PYA is Top 10, but it is nearly 200 yards. One can easily imagine Rodgers throwing for 240 yards and a couple/three scores.

With the Titans coming off a big Monday night win over the Indianapolis Colts, will 200+ yards and a couple TDs be enough for the Green Bay Packers to escape with a road win in this potential let down game for Tennessee?

NFL: Week Five Questions

This week's byes are being taken by the Cleveland Browns, Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Rams,  and New York Jets.  With three of these four teams being very disappointing, there are a surprising number of fantasy football starters amongst them.  Fortunately, bad teams' fantasy starters tend to be less productive than their perceived values.  A Le'Ron McClain or Rudi Johnson can provide enough production for the team who has to replace RB Steven Jackson for a week or Jamaal Lewis.

Tougher will be finding a replacement for Packers' QB Aaron Rodgers if your back-up was Brett Favre, Marc Bulger or Derek Anderson.  After QB JaMarcus Russell's production against the San Diego Chargers, even he would have been a free agent pool option.  Instead one is left scrambling amongst the likes of Gus Frerotte, Kerry Collins, Kyle Orton, Matt Ryan, Brian Griese and Joe Flacco.  Yikes.

The answers I seek will come the following list of questions.

Week Three Answers: Dallas Cowboys 27 Green Bay Packers 16

Q: Can the Dallas offense be stopped?

A: Apparently not.  If Tony Romo is hitting Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton, he finds Miles Austin for two deep strikes.  RB Marion Barber III has been the best RB so far this season and is playing himself into a Top 3 RB in next year's fantasy football drafts.

Q: After two solid weeks, does QB Aaron Rodgers come back to Earth?

A: Sort of.  He did not throw a TD pass, but he did throw for 290 yards, no INTs, and ran in a score.  If this ranks as a letdown, sign me up.  Rodgers is a Top 10 QB right now.

Buy Low Fantasy Player:  RB Ryan Grant.  Obtaining starting RBs is difficult via trade once the season begins.  However, Grant's early struggles have likely made him available.  Titans' RB Chris Johnson could get him.

Who To Start? Brett Favre Or Aaron Rodgers

When the season began, I expected Brett Favre to be predicatably solid as a QB1 - 250 yards and 2 TDs per game.  With a receving corps comparable to the one he had in Green Bay and a running game led by Thomas Jones, Favre looked like the answer for a 10-6 season.

At the same time, I believed in Green Bay's QB Aaron Rodgers enough to take him as my back-up QB.  The first two weeks of the 2008 NFL season have proven that pick to have been a wise one.  He throws the ball deep and hits his target unlike the Minnesota Vikings' QB.  Plus, his young legs have taken him for 60 rushing yards through two games.

Now I am stuck.  Favre was going to be my QB1 with Rodgers providing insurance in case Favre's age caught up to him via injury.  But it appears Rodgers may be the better overall QB.

Poll
Do I switch my QB1 from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers?
No. Two games are not enough time to conclude Favre will remain stuck where he is and Rodgers will continue to play at the higher level.

Yes. Rodgers already knows the Packers system and doesn't have the same problems Favre faces in New York (learning playbook and facing an ego battle with the coach.)

Week Two Answers: Green Bay Packers 48 Detroit Lions 25

Q: Is Detroit's run defense as bad as it looked against the Atlanta Falcons?
A: No.  The Packers only gained 123 yards on 30 attempts with leading rusher Ryan Grant getting just 20 on 15.  That "no" doesn't mean much as 4.1 ypc will have teams running all game.  Scarier, though, is the Lions keep falling so far behind that they can't establish a running game - not that there is much evidence that the team has one - 62 yards in Week one against the Falcons and just 49 this week.

Q: Will Aaron Rodgers repeat his passing efficiency?
A: Overall, Rodgers was 24 of 38 passing the ball, but he was a much more efficient 16 of 20 in the 1st half.  I am sure defenses willa djust some, but Rodgers looks like a legitimate Top 10 QB now.  Bet the 49ers wish they had taken him instead of Alex Smith.

Fantasy Player To Watch: QB Dan Orlovsky.  With Jon Kitna throwing pick-sixes, don't be surprised to see Orlovsky get a chance.  With Calvin Johnson and Roy Williams at wideout, any QB would have a good chance of being semi-productive.

Would You Trade Aaron Rodgers?

Here is a tough question.   I have been offered Miami RB Ronnie Brown for Aaron Rodgers plus from a team whose starting QB is Drew Brees.  My starting QB is Brett Favre.

My dilemma is risking a Favre injury and being forced to start a Trent Edwards or Jason Campbell every week.  This is a 12-team PPR with a Flex and seven-man bench.

My current RBs are Marion Barber III, Chris Johnson and Earnest Graham with Sammie Morris, Chester Taylor and Andre Hall on the bench.  Additonally, I have WRs Larry Fitzgerald and Jerricho Cotchery starting with Eddie Royal, Ted Ginn Jr and Kevin Curtis on the bench.  My TE is Antonio Gates.

What would you do?

Poll
Would you deal QB Aaron Rodgers plus for RB Ronnie Brown?
Yes as long as the "plus" isn't more than a WR3 or back-up RB

No. At Favre's age and the lack of options in the free agent pool, your team would be sunk.

No. With that kind of RB depth, you're more likely to use Aaron Rodgers more than Ronnie Brown.

Do You Agree Matt Cassel Is A Top 20 QB?

Thank God my jobh has me sitting down all the time.

Galen (Montreal): You fantasy guys get SO wrapped up in hype. Matt Cassel is a top 20 QB!? Are you kidding me? The guy is a career backup who looked awful in the preseason, most people think Guitierrez is better. At least give the guy a couple of weeks before you call him top 20!

SportsNation AJ Mass: (11:28 AM ET ) It's not hype... he'll put up better numbers than Tarvaris or Flacco or Ryan or Rodgers or even Favre most weeks b/c the system is built around the pass.

Poll
Do you think Patriots QB Matt Cassel with put up better numbers than Aaron Rodgers or Brett Favre and be a Top 20 QB?
Yes No explaination needed.

The Best Fantasy Player And Fantasy Football Sleeper: Green Bay Packers

This is Brandon from Acme Packing Company, the SBNation's Green Bay Packers blog, and I've got my fantasy football sleeper and stud column for you.

While the Packers aren't in an elite fantasy class like Indianapolis' offense, their starters are all quality fantasy options that should be at least on the roster in every league, if not starting. Plus K Mason Crosby and the Packers defense should be solid fantasy options too. Should I risk an all-Packer lineup for my fantasy team?

Fantasy Football Rankings- Tier 4 Quarterbacks

Previous Tiers: Tier 1Tier 2 - Tier 3

The Tier 4 Quarterbacks are all solid choices with great upside.  Any one of these guys could have a huge, Top Ten-QB season this year.  The trick will be figuring out which (if any) of them could be the one to breakout.  I know, easier said than done.  In alphabetical order:

Jason Campbell, Was – During the draft, the Redskins let the league know they’re going to throw the ball this season. WRs Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El are dependable targets and rookies Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly are going to stretch the field in a way the ‘Skins couldn’t manage last season. Chris Cooley (786 rec yards, 8 TDs) is a fantasy stud at tight end and rookie Fred Davis could be yet another weapon.  Whew.

Jeff Garcia, TB - I know his team is doing everything they can to NOT start him (bring in 7 other QBs, try to get Brett Favre, etc) but Garcia has everything he needs for a big season. Reliable (if..uh..very seasoned) receivers in Hilliard and Galloway and super-speedy rookie Dexter Jackson give him plenty of targets.  The running game of Earnest Graham and Warrick Dunn will keep opposing defenses honest and provide Garcia with targets out of the backfield.  Garcia’s raw stats last season didn’t overwhelm anybody, but his 63.4% completion percentage and ratio of 13 TDs to 4 INTs were excellent fundamentals.

Jon Kitna, Det – Everybody knows about Kitna, so this writeup is easy. He’s going to  throw the ball to Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson.  The Lions want to run the ball, but they have too much talent at WR to give the ball to Tatum (snicker) Bell.  Kitna will roll up a lot of yards and a lot of interceptions, so while he’ll single-handedly win fantasy games for you, he’ll single-handedly lose them for you as well.

Aaron Rodgers, GB -  Poor guy, I actually feel for him. If he’s not motivated now, nothing will motivate him.  Remember how I said Garcia has everything he needs for a big season?  Rodgers has all of that too, and his is better.  Better receivers, better RB1, better offensive line.  Better, better, better.  All Rodgers needs to do is keep his head about him (especially when the fans start booing him - I mean the fans in Green Bay) and focus on what he’s doing.  He has spent years learning from a Hall of Fame QB and practicing for this year.  If he’s mentally ready, he should have a big season.  Admittedly, that’s kind of risky.

Matt Schaub, Hou – Schaub has been carrying the “potential” label for a long time, so it’s about time he produced.   He’ll need a lot of help to make that happen this year though.  He’ll need to stay healthy (that’s been a problem), he’ll need WR1 Andre Johnson to stay healthy (also a problem) and he’ll need RBs Ahman Green and Chris Brown to stay healthy (don’t get me started).  He’ll also need his patched up offensive line to gel and it would be nice if another WR (Andre Davis? Jacoby Jones?) stepped up.  If he gets all that, he could be a Top 10 fantasy QB.

Fantasy Football Preview - Ryan Grant

What a season Ryan Grant had last year.  After the Packers plucked him off the trash heap of the Giants’ practice squad, Grant muscled his way into the starting role and finished with a fantastic 956 rushing yard, 8 rushing touchdown season.  Hey, I love that as much as anybody, but who is this guy?  How did he do it?

OK, never mind that, can he do it again?

Grant has excellent speed (he had runs of 62 and 66 yards last season) and had 30 receptions last year so he can catch the ball as well.   There’s only one major reason he may not repeat last year’s totals: the loss of Brett Favre.  Grant – and his outstanding offensive line – faced defenses concerned with stopping the all-out aerial attack of Brett Favre.  Can Aaron Rodgers continue to keep opposing defenses on their back foot?  If he can, Grant and his still-outstanding offensive line should have a big season.  But if Aaron Rodgers is a train wreck and defenses start to stack the line, Grant could end up being a late-first round bust.

Then again, if Favre actually returns at QB, it's a $1-Longnecks-No-Cover-For-The-Ladies type of party all year long for Grant.  In that case, Grant should be a second round steal.

So determining what kind of season Grant will have is a tough call, and one that doesn’t really have much to do with Grant himself.  I’m a little wary of Aaron Rodgers, so Grant may slip down into Tier 4 once the Packers open their camp.  Assuming it's Rodgers starting this season, Grant would make a very good RB2, but I’d hate to have to count on him as an anchor of my fantasy team.
