ESPN's Buster Olney on the Cubs Starlin Castro Starlin Castro, the Cubs' exceptional shortstop prospect, won't turn 20 until March, but it appears he will have a legitimate chance to climb to the big leagues sometime next summer. "He's a big strong kid, not a little flea," Cubs GM Jim Hendry said Friday. "He reminds me a lot of what Edgar Renteria looked like when he was coming up." So far, Castro has a .985 OPS in the Arizona Fall League. www.espn.com

from Will Carroll chat at BP dianagramr (NYC): Are there any historical comps for Jose Reyes' injury history, and if so, does Reyes have a happy future ahead? Will Carroll: There are a lot of guys with hamstring issues. What there aren't are a lot of guys who had these issues and stayed an elite player. Look at the speed guys throughout history and you'll seldom see a drop. They started fast, stayed fast, and only trended down with age and even then, more slowly than most would expect. The question now is what is Jose Reyes without his speed? Is he Tony Fernandez or can he become something more like Carlos Beltran? Carlos Beltran before Citifield or after? www.baseballprospectus.com

BA's Jim Callis ESPN Chat on ESPN.com July 29, 2009 Chat Andrew (New Jersey) Lightning Round...Kershaw or Strasburg? Jim Callis (2:43 PM) Strasburg. September 23, 1009 Chat Mike (Lake Forest, CA): I've seen chats where people have chosen Strasberg over Kershaw. Can you explain this to me? THey are roughly the same age but Kershaw has already dominated the NL. His ERA is under three, he has the best batting avarage against him the NL. Is Strauberg really going to be better than this or are people not realizing how good Kershaw is? Jim Callis: No, I can't explain that. I'd take Kershaw, but I think people just get excited about Strasburg's upside and don't give Kershaw credit for already thriving in the majors. HUH??? www.espn.com

Future Shock, Playoff Stars Ten Pack Kevin Goldstein Jeremy Hellickson, RHP, Rays (Triple-A Durham) Hellickson finished the year as one of the hottest pitchers in the game, striking out 41 over 27 innings in his last four starts while limiting batters to just ten hits. That success continued in the playoffs; while Hellickson made only two starts for the eventual International League champs, he struck out 18 more in 12 1/3 innings. Three of the eight hits he gave up were home runs, and he does have a tendency to elevate his pitches at times, but everything else in his scouting reports say he's nearly big-league ready. Jeremy wrote an article on Hellickson on Sunday www.baseballprospectus.com
