I was going to retire Equivalent Fantasy Average. I've always liked it, but I didn't know if anyone else was on board, and whether it was coming across as helpful or if it was a labor-intensive vanity project that filled up all sorts of spreadsheets in my computer.
But then! Like the one wise child in the Emperor's New Clothes, Andrew Craven, that lovely li'l fella, asked on Twitterr why he hadn't seen any updates this spring. And, heck, I don't know, maybe Andrew is the only one who cares, but that was enough. EFA is back, y'all.
For those new to the metric, I developed EFA a little over a year ago to sort players entirely by their fantasy contributions, based on their standard deviations from each statistical mean and displayed in terms of a scaled "batting average" so as to resemble a number we're all used to seeing. It's not predictive, in and of itself, but it does (in my opinion) carve away a big chunk of the extraneous details we don't care about for fantasy (Andrelton Simmons' glovework is wonderful, but does bupkiss in Yahoo!) and helps rank guys who specialize (Billy Hamilton's wheels vs. Mark Trumbo's power vs. Justin Morneau's relatively empty batting average) on a single scale.
Today, though, we're being predictive. I've run EFAs for 2015 based on Steamer's projections for the season. A player has to be projected for at least 300 plate appearances to qualify. Positions are given based on where FanGraphs lists players, so Joe Mauer and Carlos Santana are still catchers, Chris Davis isn't a third baseman but Miguel Cabrera is, and Kris Bryant, Yasmany Tomas and Jung-ho Kang — among others — don't even have a specific position, so only get listed in the overall rankings and not position-by-position. (For future EFA updates, I'll list guys based on where Yahoo! lists them in fantasy, but I didn't dive that deep this time.)
As a result of using Steamer, none of these projections are actually mine; there are results here that, according to my own numbers and thought processes, would be very different. But Steamer is far more thorough than am I, so it felt better to use it.
A new wrinkle for this edition of EFA: I've included players' standard deviations from the mean in the overall calculations. It doesn't change much; it's just a restatement of the same sorting class. I really only include it to show how friggin' much Steamer loves Mike Trout.
Anyway, here it goes. Thoughts on each position follow.

- I'm shocked at how low Yan Gomes is according to Steamer. A quick look at his projections indicates it's primarily in run-producing; Steamer has Gomes slated for 52 runs and 59 RBI. Both seem low to me, especially if you assume he's surrounded by Santana, Michael Brantley, Brandon Moss and Jason Kipnis in the order.
- A lot of leagues won't have Carlos Santana catcher-eligible this year. There won't be any that have Joe Mauer there. So when they are both top-seven at the position according to FanGraphs/Steamer, you can carve them right out for most leagues, and the end result is Matt Wieters, health issues and all, sliding into the back of the top 10.
- Jason Castro and Alex Avila have both been darlings in recent years, but man, do those guys (and, heck, Jarrod Saltalamacchia) provide good examples of how come-and-go the catcher position at-large can be.
- Love John Jaso as a real catcher, but so much of his value is in his batting eye that a standard 5x5 fantasy league really kills him.

- At this point, if Jose Abreu doesn't win every MVP through 2017, we're going to be disappointed after that rookie season and the subsequent hype. I'm in on it, too, but it's getting to the point where he can't possibly exceed his draft-day value.
- I know, I know, I'm biased, but holy crap did I not expect Eric Hosmer to score so well. Sure, he's projected to steal more bases than any first baseman but Paul Goldschmidt, but even that's only seven steals. Still, my boy Hos bests guys like Joey Votto, Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo, among others, and it's awfully nice.
- A year after 30 homers and 92 RBI, Steamer has Lucas Duda falling to 21 and 65 this year, bringing him down to the late 20s among first baseman. Dude still can't hit lefties, and that's always going to be a problem.
- Even worse off than Duda is Mark Teixeira, who Steamer is just done with, calling for only a .223 average and 20 homers. Garrett Jones and Alex Rodriguez will see time.

- Holy crap, does Steamer love Mookie Betts, forecasting him to be the equal of Robinson Cano this year. It comes down to the stolen bases, really, as the two have basically identical batting average and runs-scored projections. Cano leads Betts in projections on homers (18 to 13) and RBI (79 to 59), but lags behind him in steals (25 to 6), and both rise well above the rest of the position overall (non-Jose Altuve department).
- Rougned Odor over Chase Utley. Rougned. Odor. Over. Chase. Utley. That just feels wrong.
- The second (or third) tier of the position is in a big lump, ranging from Brian Dozier and Dee Gordon at seventh down to, I don't know, Utley at 19th. I have preferences in that group, and so do you, but I could make a legitimate argument to scramble those guys in a lot of different orders.
- Looking for late steals? Emilio Bonifacio always ends up falling into some playing time, and he'll run the bases whenever he does.

- Obviously, if Miguel Cabrera qualifies at third in your league (he does in Yahoo!, but that's about it), he profiles first at the position. After that, though, the next group is tough to separate. Josh Donaldson, Adrian Beltre, Anthony Rendon-if-he-can-get-healthy ... there's a lot of ways it can go.
- A year after hitting .273 with 29 homers and 80 RBI, Steamer is down on Todd Frazier for 2015, calling for .248, 23 and 71. If the average does fall off, he becomes much less exciting after a strong 2014.
- If Steamer is right, we might not be seeing that leap from Nick Castellanos quite yet.
- Looks like Casey McGehee won't be that awesome Pablo Sandoval replacement some Giants fans might have been hoping for. Not that we needed EFA to know that, but still.

- Not a lot of surprises at shortstop. I might have guessed Troy Tulowitzki would fare a bit better, but Steamer has him down for only 22 homers in 481 plate appearances, showing the projections call for at least one more injury to our intrepid Rockie.
- Jean Segura projects to rise back a bit off of his miserable 2014, with a .263 average, eight homers and 24 steals, all marginal improvements.
- Meanwhile, Jhonny Peralta is projected to fall off this year. It's primarily a power thing, with Steamer guessing he falls from 21 homers to 15, but since his value is mostly tied to his power, that's a big deal.

- Well hey there, Mike Trout, running away with the position.
- This is another example of Steamer just loving some Mookie Betts. Eleventh among outfielders? Over Ryan Braun, Michael Brantley, Starling Marte? All in, guys.
- Meanwhile, the system is relatively down on Carlos Gomez, who has been going in the middle of the first round in most drafts, barely profiles as a top-10 outfielder in this system.
- Even with a big fall-off (.271 average, 40 homers, 108 RBI in 2014; projected for .250, 26, 79 in 2015) Nelson Cruz still works out to a top-25 outfielder, because power is power is power.
- Steamer pretty clearly thinks the Red Sox outfield will primarily be Rusney Castillo alongside Betts and Ramirez, with Shane Victorino and Allen Craig hanging out down at the bottom of the projections.
