There’s nothing worse than taking a running back in the first couple rounds that flat-out screws you, and we’ve all been there (Remember the Shonn Greene year? YIKES). So this year, I’ve come up with a couple guys you can wait a little while on that should do just fine.
The following projections are ESPN’s (averaged out over a 16 game season), and the ADP is based on Fantasy Football Calculator’s PPR ADP rankings in a 12-team league.
1) Pierre Thomas, ADP 5th Round Pick 3 / PPG: 14.31
- For the record, this PPG is assuming he gets about 6 carries a game (averaged a little over 9 last year), but he’s still projected to outscore Arian Foster, Zac Stacy, Reggie Bush, CJ Spiller, and he’ll tie Giovani Bernard. In the 5th freakin’ round! I say you "reach" for Pierre in the 4th round of your draft this year, and finger-pistol the whole room.
2) Trent Richardson, ADP 5th Round Pick 6 / PPG: 13.31
- Remember the hype when he was shipped to Indy? "Those of you who got Trent in the 2nd round of your draft, what a steal!" Then poor Trent broke your hearts, and has taken a tumble in this year’s mock drafts as a result. Cue the bounce back season. These numbers aren’t assuming anything crazy either, just a healthy amount of carries (16.5 per game), and a less than horrendous YPC (3.7). Oh yeah, and he catches the ball (43 catches per year on average). By the way, the Colts are pretty good, and should be favored in almost all of the games they’re playing this year. Turn on the TV Sunday, and watch Trent pound away lowered expectations.
