Let me preface this by saying that I typically don't prefer making trades this early in the season. Pitchers are still working out the kinks, hitters are finding their groove, and in most cases it's just too early to identify a bust.
That being said, I am starting to second-guess myself in taking Harper with the 8th overall pick. From gathering everything I've read about him (which unfortunately was AFTER the draft), it seems as though he could post anything from what he did last year (.274, 71R, 20HR, 58RBI, 11SB) to a monster 30HR+ 100RBI+ season IF he stays healthy. If he puts up another 2013 line, he clearly won't be terrible, just not 1st round pick worthy. In cases like this, where the variance in outcome is so high, perhaps it is best to try and cash in on the hype early and steal a few solid contributors from an opponent?
Someone in my league just pitched me Khris Davis and CC Sabathia for Harper (which I'm going to reject). However, if they are that interested, perhaps I should look into possibly stealing a few solid pitchers for him, based on my current pitching staff?
His lineup isn't great (in my opinion), but he's got several pitchers I wouldn't mind having on my team:
Jarrod Saltalamacchia (C), Adrián González (1B), Ben Zobrist (2B), David Wright (3B), Jean Segura (SS), Mike Trout (OF), Michael Cuddyer (OF), Nelson Cruz (OF), Khris Davis (UTIL), Justin Morneau (UTIL), Rajai Davis (Bench, OF), Wilson Ramos (DL, C)
Stephen Strasburg (SP), Gio Gonzalez (SP), Chris Archer (SP), Johnny Cueto (SP), C.C. Sabathia (SP), Jered Weaver (SP), Jose Quintana (SP), Travis Wood (SP), Joe Nathan (RP), Sergio Romo (RP), LaTroy Hawkins (RP), Chad Qualls (RP)
It tails off a bit after Cueto, but it looks like he's got some depth pitching-wise that he wouldn't mind parting with. I feel my pitching staff is my biggest area of need at the moment, so that is what I would most likely target in a trade. I feel that this early in the season any trade for Harper should include a Strasburg or (Gio) Gonzalez as a starting point based on his potential alone, but then again I'm not sure, that's why I'm here asking you guys.
Thoughts/Comments? Any help would be appreciated!
