The Duda Should Abide...On Your Fantasy Team

Scott Cunningham

September baseball is finally here. Some may say it used to be more exciting when there was

wildcard.

But, Mr. Selig decided he wanted more, so now we have two, and a slightly watered down September. In real baseball, that is. At least we didn't end up with the original amount he wanted.

Wait, where was this post going?

Oh yeah, September fantasy baseball, is exciting, if you're still in the hunt. But every HR and every RBI counts. If you just lost someone, like a Yonder Alonso or even Allen Craig, for a few days, you're combing the waiver wire to find a replacement. I'm here to say you should look to Lucas Duda. Tempering expectations, there is good news and there is bad news when it comes to Lucas. Let's get the bad news first. This is what everyone sees when they're looking at Duda's year:

Pretty abysmal overall numbers. Now Duda did miss a good portion of the season with an intercostal strain and only has 294 plate appearances. But, the Mets lineup is not going to get on base at a very good clip, especially if David Wright doesn't come back. The table setting may not be there for Duda to knock in runs. But there is hope.

The good news! Since returning from the disabled list, Duda is 8-21 with 5 walks and a HR. For the season, Duda is putting up some excellent numbers in comparison to the rest of the league. If we take a look at all hitters with 250 Plate Appearances:

That may not seem like much, but these numbers are too good for Duda to be owned in a mere 3% of yahoo leagues! He is now playing first base exclusively, a position where he is much more comfortable. The stats from this year at each position tell an intriguing story:

This is a small sample, but it is fair to say Duda not having to worry about playing out of position would make him more comfortable at the plate. Ike Davis is out for the year, so the majority of the at bats at 1st base will be Duda's. Josh Satin may get some looks against lefties, but I believe the Mets want to see what Duda can give them for the rest of this season and they will play him. So go pick him up, because he's the Duda, man.
