Jean Segura: Is he still a top 5 fantasy shortstop in 2014?

Brewers shortstop Jean Segura was all the rage in the first few months of the season, as he was hitting for average, hitting for power, stealing bases, scoring runs, but as the season went along, pitchers found Segura's weaknesses. While he was hitting everything in site in the first two months, he wasn't walking too much. Let's take a look at his montly triple slash line, as the trend is pretty apparent, and should be noted when doing your shortstop rankings for 2014:

April: .367-.418-.567

May: .345-.373-.538

June: .277-.296-.429

July: .281-.327-.354

August: .252-.271-.313

September: .231-.286-.256

The trend is very disturbing as he not only has stopped hitting, he has stopped hitting for power, and getting on base. Well, his OBP was a result of his high batting average, but one thing he is still doing well is stealing bases. He has stolen at least seven bases in every month this season and already has five stolen bases in September, and he could approach 50 stolen bases with seven more steals this month.

His season numbers still look good as he is hitting .299-.333-.430 with 12 HRs, 73 runs, 48 RBI and 43 stolen bases in 55 attempts, but as you can see from the trend in his slash line above, there is reason for worry heading into the 2014 season.

Wilson Ramos: Top 10 fantasy catcher in 2014?

I wrote about Ramos in Saturday's Roundup, as he is on a home run hitting streak of late, and yesterday was no different. Ramos went 4-4 with a HR, 2 runs and 5 RBI in the Nationals 11-2 win over the Phillies. Ramos is now hitting .286-.317-.500 with 16 HRs, 28 runs and 55 RBI in just 252 at bats this season. For ease of projection, if he can duplicate this performance over 500 at bats in 2014, he would hit 30+ HRs and drive in 100+ runs. That's the #1 fantasy catcher in my book. Now, whether he can put up those numbers is a different story, and I won't rank him as such, but will include him in my top 10 fantasy catchers next season. Ramos just turned 26 years of age in August, and appears completely back from his knee injury.

Round'em Up

There is no question Paul Goldschmidt will be the #2 fantasy first baseman in 2014, right behind Orioles first baseman Chris Davis, and I admit I never saw THIS from him in 2013. Goldschmidt went 4-4 with a HR and 5 RBI in the Diamondbacks 9-2 win over the Rockies on Sunday. Goldschmidt raised his slash line to .301-.404-.544 with 32 HRs, 94 runs, 114 RBI and 14 stolen bases in 21 attempts. He currently ranks in the top three in each of the following statistical categories in the National League this season: HR, RBI, runs, walks, slugging percentage, and on base percentage.

Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams had himself a solid day at the plate on Sunday, going 2-5 with a HR, 2 runs and 2 RBI in the Cardinals 12-2 win over the Mariners. Adams, who could be handed the starting first base job next season, is now hitting .268-.326-.484 with 14 HRs, 35 runs and 44 RBI in 246 at bats. The question lies in when the Cardinals will bring up outfielder Oscar Taveras in 2014, as he missed a lot of time due to recurring ankle injuries. I could see the team starting him in AAA next season, unless he just tears it up in spring training. Assuming Taveras does start the season in AAA, the team can move Allen Craig to RF and give Adams the starting gig at first base.

The Twins are considering moving catcher Joe Mauer to first base in 2014, and who could blame them. He is currently suffering from concussion symptoms after taking a few foul balls off the catchers mask. After what happened to former Twin Justin Morneau, the Twins should seriously consider the move on a permanent basis.

Another reason for the move is the play of catching prospect Josmil Pinto. Pinto spent some time in AA and AAA this season, hitting a combined .309-.400-.482 with 15 HRs, 65 runs, 74 RBI and a solid 83-66 strikeout to walk rate in over 500 at bats. Yesterday, the 24 year old Pinto went 1-3 with a HR and 3 RBI in the Twins 6-4 win over the struggling Rays. Pinto, in 37 at bats, is hitting .405-.463-.703 with 2 HRs, 7 runs and 7 RBI since his promotion from AAA.

So where should Wil Myers rank in our outfielder rankings in 2014? Myers went 2-2 with a HR, 2 walks, 2 runs and 2 RBI in the Rays loss to the Twins on Sunday. Myers is now hitting .295-.359-.482 with 12 HRs, 39 runs, 46 RBI and 5 stolen bases in 278 at bats thus far. That production would put him on pace for a 24 home runs, 90+ RBI season in 2014, and that is probably a fair projection for him, except I might want to drop the RBI total a bit.
