Josmil Pinto - USA TODAY Sports

Is James Paxton worth adding? Could Josmil Pinto help your team over the final two weeks?

Stephen Vogt has performed well thus far while replacing John Jaso as the A’s primary catcher. His performance isn’t really that much of a surprise considering he has hit for average with good plate discipline and decent HR power throughout his minor league career thus far. He’ll be a sleeper for 2-catcher formats in 2014.

James Paxton has pitched tremendously thus far in two starts for the Mariners but will face the Tigers next week. As much as you may want to add the hot young pitcher it’s best to keep him out of your lineup for now. Don’t be fooled by Paxton’s 4.55 ERA at AAA, he pitched in the hitter-friendly PCL and had a 3.55 FIP. He’ll be a popular AL-only sleeper pick if he looks to be in the Mariners rotation plans to begin the 2014 season.

Ervin Santana pitched very well against the Tigers yesterday. Despite his terrible 2012, his production this season will lead many to value him among the third tier of SP heading into 2014 drafts and he truly deserves it.

Josmil Pinto has hit .412 with a HR in ten games since being called up. He hit .308 with 14 HR and an almost-even K:BB at AA. Very impressive, he’s certainly someone to keep in mind if you need a spot-catcher during the final two weeks. Pinto has a legitimately fantasy-useful bat.

Joe Mauer could return to the Twins lineup soon but keep in mind they have no reason to push him over the final two weeks of the season. He might not catch any games when/if he does return.

Bud Norris has had elbow pain and although the Orioles seem to be trying to downplay it, it’s possible he will not return soon or be less than effective upon his return.

There’s still a chance that Justin Masterson will be able to return to the Indians rotation within the next couple weeks.

Jason Castro still hasn’t returned from his knee injury and might rotate with Carlos Corporan even if he does return soon. The Astros have no reason to push their breakout catcher.

Alex Rodriguez is dealing with a hamstring injury but should still be okay to DH for the time being.

Alfonso Soriano injured his thumb and could miss a few days. It’s anybody’s guess as to whether this is serious enough to affect his hitting over the next couple weeks.
