My NL Only MiLB draft results

Gary A. Vasquez-US PRESSWIRE

Ray Guilfoyle details the results of the UBA NL-only minor league draft that was recently completed. The UBA league is a long standing, NYC based, home league that Ray has participated in for the past 6 years.

For you long time Fake Teams readers, you have seen me write about trades and draft results in the UBA NL-only league I participate in every year. This year will be my 7th year in the New York City based league, and the main reason I am in this league is due to the fact that around 7 years ago, I was looking for a league that included drafting minor league prospects. I had wanted to learn more about prospects, and felt joining a league would assist in increasing my knowledge of the top prospects in the game.

Our auction draft is tomorrow night in NYC, and I will be spending much of my day in the city meeting with friends and other owners in the league. For those of you in the city, I will be at Foley's Bar on 18 West 33rd Street from 3:00 -5:00 tomorrow afternoon. Stop in and say hello and have a cold one if you have the time.

To help move the auction draft along as quick as possible, we decided a few years ago to have the minor league portion of the draft a few days before the in-person auction, and here are the results of the two round MiLB draft:

First Round

1. Travis d'Arnaud, NYM

2. Yasiel Puig, LAD

3. Jorge Soler, CHC

4. David Dahl, COL

5. Albert Almora, CHC

6. Alen Hanson, PIT

7. Gregory Polanco, PIT

8. Marcell Ozuna, MIA

9. Trevor Story, COL

10. Corey Seager, LAD

11. Noah Syndegaard, NYM

12. Darrin Ruff, PHI

I picked 9th and selected Rockies shortstop prospect Trevor Story. I think he will force the Rockies to move Troy Tulowitzki to third base or first base when he is ready for the big leagues. Not that he is better than Tulo at shortstop, but the Rockies should consider moving him off short to keep him healthy and his bat in the lineup. Plus, you never know if the Rockies would eventually consider dealing Tulo. In fact, he was quoted a few months ago saying he thought he would be dealt this offseason.

I had a hard time deciding whether to pick Story or Dodgers shortstop/third base prospect Corey Seager. I decided to go with the hitter who has played a full year of minor league ball of the Dodgers second best hitting prospect. I also considered the guy who was selected with the first pick in the second round.

Second Round

1. Brian Goodwin, WAS

2. Dan Vogelbach, CHC

3. Roman Quinn, PHI

4. Hunter Morrris, MIL

5. Cody Asche, PHI

6. Michael Wacha, STL

7. Carlos Martinez, STL

8. Jake Marisnick, MIA

9. Matt Skole, WAS

10. Joe Panik, SFG

11. Brett Jackson, CHC

12. Derrick Dietrich, MIA

I tried very hard to deal for the 12th or 13th pick as i wanted Goodwin there. I also offered a $10 Josh Rutledge for picks 13, 14, 20 and 21, but to no avail. i would have taken Goodwin, Marisnick, Martinez (if available) and Arodys Vizcaino with the 13, 14, 20 and 21st picks had I made the trade.

I was surprised with a few of the picks here, including Hunter Morris, Joe Panik and Derrick Dietrich. I felt there were better prospects to be had, but I know these two owners like to focus on proximity to the big leagues over high ceiling prospects in the MiLB draft.

I will write about my AL-only MiLB draft results later today or tomorrow, as we are currently in the second round of that draft. In addition, I will write about my keeper rosters for both teams and my draft strategy (yeah right) for the two drafts which take place on Friday night (NL only) and Saturday night (AL only).

i actually have a draft on Sunday morning for the NL only keeper league that I have participated in for the last 15 years (I think).
