Minor League Level Review (AAA): Profar and Taveras Miss Time, Zunino Off to Hot Start

USA TODAY Sports

Jason Hunt takes a look at the action from the two AAA leagues in the past two weeks, including recent callups Allen Webster and Tony Cingrani, as well as top prospects Jurickson Profar, Mike Zunino, and others in this weekend's Minor League Level Review.

Every other Sunday, I will be taking a quick look at some of the top prospects at the AAA level, including their stats for for the season, and if anything stands out about the performance. The season stats may not always tell us the whole story, but there are usually also some updates on how they are doing these things as opposed to just the numbers themselves. All statistics are courtesy of MILB.com, and are through the games of Friday, 4/19/13.

  • Profar has missed a few games so far due to some nagging injuries, but had a great game against Oklahoma City on the 16th where he was a double shy of the cycle.
  • Cardinals' top prospect Oscar Taveras had to deal with a personal matter to start the season, but has returned to action already and is off to a good start. I think he debuts for good at some point this season, and isn't going anywhere in a trade.
  • d'Arnaud just can't seem to catch a good break, as he will miss 6-8 weeks with a broken foot. Keep playing John Buck while he's hot, as he is now looking at even more playing time than was originally expected.
  • With the Dodgers getting so little production from third and shortstop, could we see Dee Gordon return to the Majors? He is hitting .321 with 9 stolen bases, but the caveat that it is Albuquerque (a known high offense environment) and the PCL.
  • Wil Myers has been a bit up and down with his performance this year, and Baseball Nation's Rob Neyer speculated about whether he should already be in the Rays' lineup. I would think he should, but that has more to do with me really wanting to see what he can do in the Majors already. Bear in mind that Myers isn't on the 40-man roster as of yet so that would require a move as well.
  • Myers' teammate in Durham, Hak-Ju Lee, has been hitting out of his mind, and I wonder if we could see him should Yunel Escobar continue to struggle like he has so far at the plate. UPDATE: Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times is reporting that Lee has torn ligaments in his knee, and will likely miss the rest of the season.

  • I was able to see Hultzen for his start on April 9th, and overall he pitched reasonably well. The biggest thing I was hoping to see from him was a return to the control he had shown at AA last year, and it did manifest itself while I was there.
  • Cingrani has already received the call, and you can read what I thought of him going forward here.
  • My post about Red Sox prospect Allen Webster was going to run on Monday, but with him getting the call to make the second start of Sunday's doubleheader, we moved that post to Saturday.
  • Archer started one of the two games of a doubleheader on Saturday, and from the looks of it, struggled later on in the start with his release point, according to Bernie Pleskoff. It remains to be seen when he could be called upon to start for the Rays, especially given that his teammate is pitching even better at the moment.
