Fantasy Baseball 2014: Early Top 20 Catcher Rankings

Doug Pensinger

Ray publishes his early take on the fantasy catcher position with his top 20 catchers for 2014.

Today, I begin my early 2014 position rankings, and I start off with my top 20 fantasy catchers for 2014. I will publish my top 20 at each position, although I have gone 30 deep at each position, and 50 deep for the outfielders and starting pitchers. I will not offer much in comments here, as I will save them for our 2014 Consensus Position Rankings that will publish beginning in January.

Here is my early take on the top 20 fantasy catchers for 2014:

Quick Thoughts

I ranked Buster Posey as my #1 ranked fantasy catcher, but have to say I am concerned with his terrible second half which saw him hit .244 with just two home runs in 2013.....I may move Indians catcher Carlos Santana up to the #2 spot in my rankings, but Wilin Rosario proved his power breakout in 2012 was no fluke......I had Brian McCann as low as #7 in my rankings before moving him up to the 5 spot.......the same goes for Joe Mauer, as I had him at #8 before sliding him up to #7.....Will we see a repeat of the power breakout from Wilson Ramos in 2014? He had a terrific second half......Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero may be ranked too low, but he had a down year in 2012, and he hits in a hitters park......Astros catcher Jason Castro had his own power breakout in 2013, and I can see him possiblly moving up a few spots in my rankings come January......Will the Braves sign a starting catcher to replace Brian McCann or will Evan Gattis be their every day catcher in 2014?......Gattis has big power, but rarely takes a walk and will not help in the batting average category.....The one catcher on this list that could break out in 2014 is Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco. Once a top prospect, he has struggled at the plate in a part time role, but now that Dusty Baker is out of Cincinnati, he could/should play every day.
