Roto Roundup: Cliff Lee, Brett Gardner, Justin Morneau and Others

NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 18: Justin Morneau #33 of the Minnesota Twins hits a two run home run against the New York Yankees during their game on April 18, 2012 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx borough of New York City. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)

Diamondbacks outfielder Chris Young landed on the DL with a small tear in his right shoulder. Here is a tweet from Nick Piecoro from the Arizona Republic:

Dbacks OF Chris Young has a ligament tear and a deep bruise in the shoulder. No one would give any indication of how long he might be out.

Young injured himself on a running catch in Tuesday night's game. Gerardo Parra and A.J. Pollock are instant adds in NL-only leagues and deeper mixed leagues. DBacks GM Kevin Towers wouldn't put a timetable on when Young will return, so I expect him to be out longer than 15 days.

Scott Miller from CBS Sports tweeted that Justin Upton also landed on the DL, but I have not seen it reported anywhere else. Upton pinch ran in the 9th inning of yesterday's game, so it is possible he was placed on the DL after the game.

Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner landed on the DL as well with a strained right elbow. Andruw Jones, Raul Ibanez and Eduardo Nunez will fill in for Gardner while he is out, per manager Joe Girardi.

Cardinals first baseman Lance Berkman stole a base last night, but left the game after running for a foul popup after re-aggravating his calf injury. I could have called that. He stated after the game that a DL stint is a possibility. Those of you in NL-only leagues should pick up Matt Carpenter.

More Roto Roundup, with an update on Stephen Straburg, after the jump:

Reds outfielder Drew Stubbs went 1-3 with a strikeout last night, and is hitting just .186-.222-.186 for the season, with just one stolen base. On top of all that, he has struck out 15 times in 45 at bats this season. 200 Ks are in his future if he plays everyday, or most everyday, but I don't see that happening. He could easily be a 4th outfielder this season and a late inning defensive replacement if this continues. Extreme? Maybe.

Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan has sat out the last few games due to tightness in his hamstring, opening up an opportunity for someone else to grab a few save opportunities, so who does manager Clint Hurdle turn to? Juan Cruz? Yep. Cruz has earned two saves over the past two days, but I am not sure I would recommend adding him in any league till we learn more about Hanrahan's injury.

Twins DH Justin Morneau went 3-4 with 2 HRs and 3 RBI last night to help the Twins beat the Yankees 6-5. Morneau has his triple slash line up to .279-.340-.605 with 4 HRs and 6 RBIs. It's hard to root against Morneau after everything he has been through.

Phillies starter Cliff Lee tossed 10 shutout innings last night vs the light-hitting Giants, giving up just 7 hits, no walks and striking out 7. He needed only 102 pitches to get through 10 innings, 81 of which where strikes. That's right. He only threw 21 balls. Wow.

Giants starter Matt Cain was every bit as effective as Lee was last night, as he tossed 9 shutout innings vs the Phillies, giving up just 2 hits, walking 1 and striking out 4. He lowered his ERA to 1.88. The Giants are happy they signed him, and not Tim Lincecum, to a long term deal.

The Red Sox lost again last night, and one has to wonder what they were thinking when they traded for Andrew Bailey when other, healthier closers were out there. The other closer/MR they traded for, Mark Melancon, is now in AAA trying to get over the 3 HRs he gave up on Monday. The Red Sox bullpen is a mess right now, and their woes continued on Wednesday night as Franklin Morales gave up 3 runs while getting one out. All that money and their bullpen can't get anyone out right now. Should be an interesting season in Boston and it gets better this weekend as the Yankees come to town, so get ready for those 4 1/2 hour games.

Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista was a first round pick in many fantasy leagues this season, yet he has disappointed all fantasy owners, except those in OBP leagues. Bautista is hitting just .231-.373-.410 with 2 HRs and 5 RBI. He has just 3 extra base hits in his 39 at bats thus far. I know SSS, but I wonder if he can approach 40 HRs again this season. I don't see it.

Before the season started, Nationals GM Mike Rizzo talked about putting an innings cap on his ace starter Stephen Strasburg. We heard that the cap might be 160 innings, maybe a bit more. But yesterday, Rizzo confirmed that he is still planning to cap his innings, in an interview with MLB Radio's Inside Pitch show hosted by Casey Stern and Jim Bowden.

So if the Nationals are in a pennant race in September, and Strasburg has hit his innings limit, Rizzo still plans to take him out of the rotation. Good move or bad move?
