What would you give up for Mike Stanton?
So the question is what would you give up for Mike Stanton? I am in a 12 team keeper league. We keep 5 players. We get to keep players indefinitely. I have Adrian Gonzalez, Matt Kemp, Justin Upton, Carlos Santana, Ryan Zimmerman, Asdrubal Cabrera, and Josh Hamilton as possible keepers. The team that has Stanton has Prince Fielder, Ryan Howard, Mike Stanton, Jason Heyward and Justin Verlander. If I keep Kemp, Upton, Gonzalez, Santana and Zimmerman does trading for Stanton help my team? I was thinking pick two from Santana, Zimmerman and Cabrera. Is that a good trade? What if he included Verlander? Your thoughts would be welcome. Thanks.

Not necessary
Considering you already have 3 outfielders that could potentially reach 30 or more HR in 2012 (Kemp, Upton and Hamilton) as well as power from A-Gon, I’m not sure I’d make any deal at the cost of the advantage Santana and Zimmerman should give you over most team’s catchers and third basemen. I think Santana is widely considered the #1 catcher entering the season (I’d have chosen V-Mart before the injury) and Zimmerman could be anywhere from a Top 3 -Top 5 third basemen.
Are there any decent players on the other 10 teams in the league? Seems like all the good ones are on the two teams you’ve mentioned.
huh?
I’d have chosen V-Mart before the injury
as the #1 catcher? seriously? over McCann?

Yes. Seriously.
V-Mart scored more runs than McCann in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011. He also had more RBI in all four of those seasons. Were it not for an injury shortened 2008, it’s likely he’d have had better counting stats than McCann for five consecutive seasons. Not to mention that he’s reached 600 PA four of the last seven seasons and had 595 in 2011.
V-Mart also has a career .303 AVG as compared to a .286 AVG for McCann.
McCann is the better base stealer as he has averaged about 3.5 SB per season over those 5 years as compared to 1 SB per season for Martinez and it’s likely McCann would’ve hit more HR than Martinez in 2012, but V-Mart hit more in 2007, 2009 and only 1 less in 2010.
Therefore, I’d say Martinez is better in 3 of 5 standard roto scoring categories with McCann only slightly better in SB and potentially better in HR if Martinez were to have similar power numbers from 2011.
keepers
I have 7 possible keepers, I can only keep 5. Which 5 should I keep?
First four you listed for sure ...
then the 5th for me would be between Zimmerman and Hamilton with Cabrera out.
Bill James projections:
Josh Hamilton
133 Games, 27 HR, 83 R, 95 RBI, 8 SB, .310 AVG
Ryan Zimmerman
139 Games, 22 HR, 81 R, 81 RBI, 3 SB, .291 AVG
As you can see by those projections, Hamilton is more valuable across the board while playing in 6 less games. Both are in contract seasons and both have injury concerns. Zimmerman has position scarcity going for him while Hamilton has potential 1st Rd. value if able to play in 140-150 games.
It’s somewhat of a tough call, but I’d probably lean toward keeping Hamilton and hope for the upside and you can afford the risk considering how excellent your other four keepers are.
Bill James projections
= something you shouldn’t quote

You're probably right...
but I actually think both his projections for Hamilton and Zimmerman are pretty spot on with both factoring in the likelihood of injury.
CAIRO
Hamilton
399 AB, .303/.358/.532 with 20 HR and 73 RBI
Zimmerman
415 AB, .281/.354/.463 with 16 HR and 63 RBI
I’d have to agree with Kevin, as Hamilton’s projections are must more consistent (and consistently higher). However, I’d think about keeping AsCab, as SS is so shallow and getting a guy who can get you some numbers is something that you need to “keep” moving forward.
Or, you could packaged Zimmerman, Hamilton and AsCab for Stanton and a legit Starter.

I'd keep
Kemp/Agonz/Upton/Santana/Zimmerman. I wouldn’t expect a better third baseman to be available in the draft if everyone keeps 5 players, if there is and he falls to you then you can provide yourself with insurance while filling the DH/Utility position. Keeping Hamilton as a third outfielder is not a wise choice imo. You have two #1 OF’s, you can easily afford a traditional #3 and still have a balanced OF. No reason to run the risk of having slim pickins for 3b during the draft.

Offer him Hamilton and Zimmerman
and if he declines, then keep the first five on your list. Cabrera is an easy release, and Hamiltonis an injury risk and he’s got his unfortunate off-the-field issues.
I think you’re pretty good as it stands, and if I were the other owner I would be pretty happy with that five..
Cabrera is an easy release
or an easy sell high, or an easy keep.

right
because that huge jump from 3.0% to 13.3% in HR/FB is likely to repeat itself. Pass.

New question then.
Is Andrew McCutchen worth more than Stanton. Same players apply up top, the team with McCutchen has Kershaw, Lincecum, HanRam and Reyes. What would it take to get Kershaw and McCutchen? Or, how much more valuable is McCutchen than Zimmerman?
