Dynasty Draft Question

I have the first pick in a 30-team dynasty league - 25 man MLB roster, 40 man MiLB roster. I've got a beater of a team, with a few young pieces (Arenado, Rubby, Minor) and not much else, and am rebuilding through the minors. I tried to trade away the pick for multiple pieces but have only had one offer, and it wasn't really to my liking.

All 2011 draft picks are eligible, and until today I was down to Darvish and Rendon as my top pick. With Cespedes signing, though, he is now eligible to be drafted as well. Since I have a rebuilding team, Cespedes doesn't quite fit my team, but I'm thinking of drafting him to trade him to a contender for multiple pieces.

So, should I draft Cespedes and attempt to deal him, or just draft one of the other top guys (Darvish, Bauer, Rendon) and follow my team model? Much thanks!

Draft Darvish.

Yu Darvish has more upside than Cespedes, who has half his hype coming from himself in the form of his 30-minute videos. Cespedes will be okay, but OAK won’t help his stats at all. Darvish is playing for a contender has has better potential to be a star addition. Yes, I realize there’s issues with Japanese pitchers, but some have done pretty well (Kuroda comes to mine), and if any Japan pitcher is going to be a true ace, it’s Darvish.

Rendon

Personally, I’d take Rendon – I think long-term he’s going to be more valuable for fantasy than Darvish.

That said, I’d try to see if anyone was interested in acquiring Darvish rather than the pick – see if that potentially increases your offers. I definitely wouldn’t take Cespedes ahead of either of them myself.

Can't go wrong with Rendon.

More a decision of win now, versus win later. Rendon needs some time in the minors, whereas Darvish will help you in 2012.

Like the strategy

Good idea presented here by Jason. You are most likely to get better offers if you shop draft rights rather than a pick. I’d try and look for owners that are fans of specific teams, i.e. a Pirates fan to potentially shop Cole to etc.

Also, if you’re looking for a bat Rendon is the way to go, if you are looking for pitching I’d probably go with Bundy.
